I have been reading else where that the sailing mags etc are starting to advise not using road diesel in boat tanks as the bio-diesel content (soon to be increased) will make it more susceptible (sic) to the bugs.I've been using it for years with a splash of soltron for good measure. Is it now time to think of a change?

what terms would you suggest?

Most posts seem to discuss the duty issue. Found one detailed post about bugs in diesel, but not specifically biodiesel and bugs.

I'm sure a few would be interested in the answer from someone who knows /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm not sure that answers the OP's question though - he was asking whether current road diesel makes the boat's fuel system more susceptible to bugs. As far as I can see, only Lateboater's response attempts to address that specific question.

Good question, i use red mostly then throw in a tankfull of white every now and then, the bio diesel content and the problems that go with it never occured to me, thanks for posting.

Good article in the latest edition of the RYA members magazine on the subject. Consensus is no significant effect at the current level of 5%, but can be problems with 25% because suggests that high bio can break down residues in fuel lines and suggests changing fuel filters shortly after changing over to bio.

Overall conclusion is don't worry.

I did use the search facility and Saranbade and Refueller had the most relavent posts but not exactly what I was looking for. Sorry to have bored you I will endevor to do better next time.
Thanks to the other posters, appreciate the comments/input.

At a presentation by a Nanni engine dealer, your question was asked. They said that at the current allowed 5% biodiesel level it would not have an effect. The gentleman who asked was concerned about any problem over the winter period.

Here's a part by part answer to Chiefeng's post:

Not quite true. There are 3 types of bugs and 'bio' per se makes diesel more resistING to them all

I've been using it for years with a splash of soltron for good measure.

Soltron used to be good for all the bugs but doesn't work anymore in my tank (50L). There may be better 'icides on the market as Soltron is pretty old hat and non-modified since its inception.

Is it now time to think of a change? -YES

But to what?????

Someone asks about safety gear for a crossing to Holland and you give him an answer. Similarly someone asks about crap wristwatches and he also gets an answer from you. There are many other examples of questions you have answered amongst your "recent posts"

This man asks a perfectly reasonable question about fuel and he gets a smart-arse answer.

What criteria do you use when deciding how to respond to peoples' questions?

[No doubt I can expect a smart-arse answer to that question.]

1/ Holland - question answered based on "what preferences would you list"

2/ Watch- i have among others a Seiko Chrono that needed service due to damage by me - A Seiko Service = replace movement

3/ Bio diesel - many posts in the past few weeks, the Op has good Forum experence & failed to mention he had infact tried the search facility & asked the wrong questions of it. I found some of the answers.

4/ dont intent "smart arsed" answers just few words to the point. It might be abrupt to some but thats me /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

"4/ dont intent "smart arsed" answers just few words to the point. It might be abrupt to some but thats me /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif"

Then I think maybe "that's me" should consider modifying his attitude a bit. Hey don't get me wrong, I can do smart arsed too, but I do try not to do it in answer to sensible questions.

Just remember the old saying. "There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers"......

It's fine isn't it, and I wasn't suggesting that you were short with people, or smart arsed all the time. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
