RO4800 VHF output question

Hi,

In the manual for the RO 4800 VHF it says that the AIS is output on 1 set of NMEA lines at a switchable rate of 4800/38400 baud, the GPS position info is input on another set of NMEA lines at 4800 baud and there is an option to repeat the GPS input data onto the AIS output data lines. All this I understand.

There is, however, another pair of NMEA output lines which the manual is a bit more sketchy about, calling them "DSC" output in 1 version of the manual and just plain "NMEA" in another. This "DSC" data is output at 4800 baud.

My questions are :

  1. What is this DSC data, and do I want it input into my MFD ?
  2. Is it automatically repeated on the AIS output lines ? (There is no mention of an option to force this in the manual as there is for the GPS position data).

Anyone with an RO4800 happen to know the answer to this ?

Thanks,

Boo2

The DSC data is exactly as it says - a repeat of the incoming DSC data. How well your plotter deals with it may vary, but ideally it would enable things like doing a position request for a friend and having his boat appear on the chart. The position sent with a Distress call would probably be shown, if the plotter handles DSC at all.

Up to you whether you think this is useful or not.

No idea about the RO radio's specific behaviour.

Here is my wiring schematic for the RO4800 connected to a Garmin GPSMAP 750. I have not connected the DSC info to the Garmin, but this is to display for instance a distress position received from another vessel over DSC. I recall this uses the same port as that used for the Garmin position data to the RO4800 set to low speed.

For the Garmin I have set one channel to hi speed for the AIS data from the RO4800 to the Garmin, and Low speed for the position data from the Garmin to the RO4800. Your plotter must have two ports, so for instance will not work with a Lowrance HDS5 or 7M on both functions simultaneously.
