Hi All,

This has already been posted on the PBO forum (but as it's for a good cause I hope you won't object), and we have just had our first donation from a forumite - a very generous £50. Let's see if any of you moboers can match the generosity of the sailors!

I will be paddling a canoe down the longest river in Britain. The full story should be announced on the PBO news page today: http://www.pbo.co.uk/

I am hoping to raise lots of money for my favourite charity, The RNLI.

Please show some support, and perhaps be the first to donate:

Many thanks,

Pete

Over 100 people have viewed this thread and still no donations from any Motor Boat owners!

The total so far is up to £165, from 4 donations.

Don't let the side down!

Pete

Hi Pete

(I'm sticking my head above the wall here... hopefully I have not misunderstood the rest of the forum... but you never know and happy to be shot down )

I saw your thread a few days ago and I thought this is a brilliant effort and without doubt 100% of folk on here support the RNLI.

However I put my hand up and admit I for one did not sponsor you, why? Well I have a monthly Direct debit to the RNLI that actually adds up to quite a sizeable amount every year (in my opinion anyway!). So IMHO the reason that you have not been overwhelmed by donations is certainly not because we don't support your tremendous efforts but more the case that we all in our own way support the RNLI to the best of our ability. I also wouldn't mind betting that over 50% of folk on the Mobo forum also have a DD to the RNLI... but perhaps I am wrong.

Notwithstanding I am going to sponsor you, as there seems to be a risk that Mobo owners are going to be branded mean and non-supporting which I know I am not ... :):)

Pete, please let me know when you are piddling past Tewkesbury. If the timing works we will see you just above the Upper Lode Lock, and we can re-stock you with some calories/fluids whatever, plus some moral support.

Thank you very much for your donation - much appreciated!

I agree with you, I imagine many people on the forum do already support the RNLI.

As well as raising money for the RNLI I will hopefully also be helping to raise awareness and remind people of the fantastic work they do. I think we are very lucky as a nation to have them. To that end the fact that nearly 300 people have read this thread will in itself have helped. I am very happy to publicly support what I consider to be the best charity we have.

For those who do contribute regularly please keep doing so. For those who don't please consider donating as a one off gesture of appreciation and support through my fundraising page:

Or perhaps, next time you are at the bar in the yacht club slip some extra change into the RNLI pot and think of me paddling 130 miles!

Your support has been fantastic - I am up to £130 through just giving, and yesterday I received a cheque for £250 from one very generous supporter...

Thanks again,

Pete

Well certainly not shooting you down, and I agree that the RNLI do great work, but it is already a particularly well funded charity, and for that reason only I would (and do) choose to donate to other causes.

As do I Nick, but IF the day ever came where I needed the services of the RNLI, I now feel I have at least paid my way...

Well if that were the only reason (and i'm not suggesting it is), then arguably you've paid to support a service in case you ever need it, which is more like a subscription than a charitable donation?

Most of us prefer to give to charities we have a connection with dont we? Many of my friends have boats, ive always had a boat so I naturally give to the rnli. I hope I wont ever need them but you never know.
