In support of grandson, I researched the job application programme.

I was encouraged by the statement in the "Role Finder" on-line information, that there are no opportunities for those aged 99 and over.

Not too late!:sneaky:

As with most MoD websites it is, of course, incorrect, or at least will (I hope) be later this year, though qualification is somewhat restricted.

Oh dear, how disappointing.

That's something else I shall have to remove from my bucket list.

On the flip side of that particular coin, it happens that the last Captain of HMS Queen Elizabeth has not been born yet......

Those of us in the grubby business of making money out of ships tend to add the letters “agw” (“all going well”) to predictions of future events, be they as mundane as “With two gangs and both cranes she’ll finish cargo for the tide tomorrow, agw” or as glamorous as predicting the life span of a shiny new ship.;)

On the same principle, our scruffy seagoing trucks have log books which show passages “towards”, not “to” places.:sneaky:

Interesting case but as the title of the article suggests the bridge technology was designed by a committee and was about as un-ergonomic as you could find. There is a very long history of issues with autopilots which do not clearly indicate whether they are engaged or not including the Torrey Canyon and the Exxon Valdez.

Not much of a problem there, managed to avoid one continent and only fetched the other one a glancing blow :)

.

‘The navigator knows of no sensation more disagreeable than that of running ashore, unless it be accompanied by a doubt as to which continent the shore belongs to.’
