I need to obtain about 50 rivnuts (at least I think that's the name ) to fix a threaded insert into thin ally sheet . All the suppliers I have tried will only supply in large quantities. Any ideas?
Do be careful with rivnuts. We use thousands every year at work. Unless they are properly set, the nut will spin in the hole, so once the bolt is done up you'll never get it undone. NEVER use ones without an anti-rotation device - you might as well use a rivet if you do.
There are several ways around the rivnut spinning.
1) Some have a splined section that is supposed to grip the edge of the hole. DO NOT rely on this method! I suppose we have had 25% spin rates with these before giving up on them - and our customers moaned like anything.
2) Some have little lugs on the underside of the head (Clufix do this type among others). This works most of the time - one or two have spun out of several thousand.
3) The only absolutely reliable anti-spin type are the ones with a hex shank that go into a hexagonal punched hole. Not easy to do at home unless you buy/make your own hex punch.
Just been talking to people at work who've used the rivnuts with anti-rotation lugs on. The don't work terribly well in aluminium in the larger sizes - we use them mostly in steel. Use the hexagonal sort and don't use too high a torque.
