Rivnut addendum

Further to the thread yesterday, The rivnut is made of steel, the mast aluminium. Why does the rivnut collapse before the (weaker) mast deforms?

The rivnut is designed to deform and has a weaker section so that it deforms where it should so that it grips and works as designed

You can get aluminium and stainless rivnuts

Same reason I can crumple this in my hand:

(Aluminium)

Are you sure that is steel? It looks like aluminium, to me... (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beverage_can). But the principle is correct, even if the image is not

I don't know about the specific can in the stock photo. But Fosters cans in the UK at least are steel, as we discovered when my dad stowed a load of them right next to the autopilot compass

When my son was young we had to stop him drinking Irn Bru, although it was his favourite. It caused severe hyperactivity and bad behaviour. Might explain a lot
