rivets for mast steps

I've just bought 2 mast walker steps for top of mast for sadler 29.Does anybody know the thickness of the mast I'll need to rivet onto? What depth of monel rivets of 6mm dia should I use?
Does anybody have a supplier for both rivets & gun they can recommend?
Also I'm thinking of buying a rivet gun I notice Seago sell one for about £50 are they any use?

Foxs marina on 01473 691235 sold me some monel rivets .very helpful and will probably advise you what depth you need .You need the rigging dept for the rivets .

I'm pretty sure that my mast walker steps came with two or three posi drive self tappers for each step- are you sure about the rivets?

The lazy tongs type of gun can be bought for less than £20. Someone posted a link on here about a month ago, I think the brand was Sealey.

Don't use self tappers, can cause problems with ropes and wires in mast.

Be careful not all lazy tong rivet guns will be able to cope with 6mm monel rivets. Also will not be easy to use while at the top of the mast in a busons chair. If you are in the Ipswich area I could lend you my riveter.

The ones I linked to cope very well with 6mm Monel rivets thank you. Well my set do and are easy to use at the top of the mast from a bosun's chair - all one needs is a suitable technique /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I bought a 'lazy tong' rivetter from Screwfix about 18 months ago, which gave me no problem with 6.4mm monel rivets I can't remember what I paid but they currently list at just over £33. Monel rivets are available from Sea Screw, but their postage costs are on the high side from memory. Not too bad if you've got a decent order.
