Does anyone know who owns the moorings on the west bank of the Usk, next to the Alexandra Dock? It seems the council describes them as ad hoc, though I'm not sure what they mean by this..

Not sure if they are moorings or boats tied to the bank, I guess the differance is if they have to pay the crown.

Looked into this myself many many years ago...probably about 20 years back!
It was then....may well be different now though....used by employees or friends/families of employees of the docks (not sure if it was ABP back then?).
Very basic home made moorings,i.e, steaks driven into the mud and thats about it.
Seen some absolute monster debris come down the Usk over the years (I worked on the sand warf opposite) and I would be nervous every time we had a flooded river tbh.
Probably worth a call to ABP though?
You could always join Uskmouth sailing club if your boat is on a trailer, but the only have sailing boats there.

Many thanks for the info, will see if I can find out any more.
I did find a council document with some grand plans, all of which appear to have stalled. A marina at Crindau, tidal barrier, waterfront development at the old town lock and pleasure craft moorings mentioned at several places....

I too have seen some plans for the developement of Newport........the artists impressions make it look like the south of France somewhere!
The re-developement is pretty much on hold now (I work at a local ready mixed concrete plant btw) due to the Welsh and English governments argueing then pulling the plug on the finance.
Who knows, perhaps in 20 years time we may be berthing at the Old town docks!

If you have a sailing boat, then the moorings at Newport Uskmouth Sailing club come foc with club membership, and the club is really well equipped with everything from boat lift to compound space with water and leccy. However there is a club limit on the number of mobos and we have passed that limit already.
The moorings further up river are ad hoc, and are nothing to do with ABP. If you wanted to ask then get in touch with the harbour master.
Lot less rubbish coming down river these days - the farmers who used to use it as a rubbish chute have realised that there is money in dead trees, and since the council now collects dead fridges etc, there are far fewer tinker encampments throwing them into the river. Really isnt an issue these days.

I don't have one yet.
Was thinking about getting a boat I could spend a few nights a week on to avoid a long commute (and avoid paying inflated rents). Trouble is there doesn't really appear to be anywhere in Newport where I could moor a yacht safely. Well, not without wading through mud anyway..

She might suss a few things. Namely that
a) I want a boat and any excuse counts towards getting one
b) That a boat costs lots of handbags / shoes and curtains.
c) That she snores like a wilderbeast and I need a few days a week of peace
d) That Newport may not be the metropolitan mecca of idealised living that I may have made out.
e) If I'm prepared to commute from Cardiff then there is no good reason why I'm not prepared to commute from her mountaintop retreat.

When a cruiseship went to Cardiff a couple years ago it docked in Newport. All you need to do is tell her Newport is a suburb of Cardiff. If she visits just drive fast along the M4.Quite.

Come to think of it if it docked on a weekend then some portly Americans would have been treated to the sight of a scantily clad female population attempting to breed...

As far as I know it only came once. The next one anchored off Penarth.
I don't think the passengers saw much of Newport as they were bussed into Cardiff. They probably saw the mating habits of the Cardiff girls! Hopefully they treated it like a safari! I can imagine a group of rotund Americans in bright shirts being driven around Cardiff in a Land Rover with a commentary by David Attenborough.
Unfortunately the same could apply to any UK city.

Slight anti Newport sentiment, I detect. Granted the fair city doesn't have the unspoilt charm of Port Talbot or the bohemian sophistication of Merthyr Tydfil; perhaps some of the detractors base their opinions on their experiences as young(er) men in TJ's or Capone's -both long gone. BTW, the cruise company told the punters they were docking in "Cardiff East".
