River Pageant - 2015

If it's a real problem - and I believe it absolutely is - then I guess we motor boaters are simply going to have the take the matter into our own hands, because it is clear the authorities really don't consider it a priority issue. (If indeed they consider it an issue at all.) NR has his plan for next season, and like others I too would like to watch and see the YouTube footage! But in a more formal/'legal'(!) footing, I personally would like to see both British Rowing and the community of Thames rowing clubs start to take the issue more seriously themselves. Im not sure under what 'forum' that would best be achieved, but I'd be interested in considered views...
The 'correct' forums to air these issues are the River User Groups which are sponsored by the EA and which encourage the participation of all river users on a particular stretch to meet together and sort out their differences as well as communicating issues back to the EA. RUG 7 for instance (on which your club has a representative) covers Boulters to Bell Weir. and RUG 8 covers Bell Weir to Teddington. RUGs meet 3 or 4 times a year and are usually attended by EA staff as well as users themselves.
The EA's job is to manage the maintenance and operation of the river, not to act as a mediator between warring factions! Although they are expected to take action when offences against the by-laws are observed the reality is that, unless they are fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time, their ability to act is limited.
Well documented complaints to the user groups, British Rowing and river user organisations such as the ATYC and TMBA do get listened to and I have personal knowledge of such complaints resulting in action being taken to improve matters.

Photographic evidence can be good - even from mobiles - but most coaches should be with members of an identifiable rowing club.

I gave photographic evidence last year of a high powered speed boat in Windsor. Nothing was done even though I managed to track down the address of the owner (he was selling boat on Ebay, and was demonstrating the power of the boat to prospective buyer) Unless the EA officer sees it with his own eyes then maybe some thing will be done.
As boatone says bring it up at the RUG meetings. You do not have to be a member of any club to attend.

Were you willing to give a statement to accompany your photo ? A lot of the time , the photo just shows a boat going fast without any idea of where it took place.

Very difficult if not impossible to go ahead with prosecutions with anonymous photos and reports.

There was nothing anonymous, I phoned the duty office when it happened with exact location. Gave a statement etc. No prosecution not even a demand for a day licence.

"Magna Carta 800th The River Relay

Thames Alive is producing another exciting River Pageant in June 2015 as a part of the 800th anniversary celebrations of the sealing of the Magna Carta. It takes place on and beside the River Thames between Hurley and Runnymede and is being arranged with the support of and on behalf of the Boroughs of Runnymede, Spelthorne and the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead. This will be a uniquely memorable weekend; be part of it!

The River Relay

Thames Alive is organising a River Relay from Hurley Riverside to Runnymede Pleasure Ground over two days, 13th and 14th June, carrying a facsimile of the Magna Carta, created by young people in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Stopping at various points on the way we recount the story of the Magna Carta and hand over the responsibility of carrying the document to a new relay bearer who will be on board the Royal Shallop "Jubilant" and escorted by rowed craft. The flotilla will continue travelling down stream with opportunities for other craft which have had their registration confirmed to take part, to join in.

The main part of the pageant from up river will be rowed and /or paddled craft although there are opportunities for motor or steam craft to join in at certain points. The final section will be a spectacular assembly of craft escorting the Document to Runnymede.

We invite you to apply to take part in this historic event."

So, as you can see, it is primarily meant for Traditional Rowed Craft like Gloriana, Jubillant and Shallops etc and not motorboats....

Glad we are back on topic..

However your quote above shows that you have not read the press release correctly. Additionally, should you be bothered to read the application form, there is a box specifically asking that MB's have a current BSS.

Your apology is anticipated...

I read the press release. It clearly shows that "The main part of the pageant from up river will be rowed and /or paddled craft" "although there are opportunities for motor or steam craft to join in at certain points."

My comment is therefore valid. As for the box asking for motor craft to have a current BSS, this is required for Thames Registration, therefore motor boats on the Thames should have one as a matter of course.

I therefore see no need for an apology...

The two bolded sections show that you just disagree with yourself then.

Not really my problem.
