Hi all,

I'm hoping the British summer perks up before our holiday to Cornwall in a couple of weeks. We are hoping to get out for a day sail on the Fal, and I have seen a place called Mylor Boat Hire which does a little gaff dayboat. First of all, can anyone recommend any other places to hire a large dinghy/small keelboat from for a day, in case they have nothing available?

Secondly, any recommendations for a day cruise on the Fal? I sailed there once many years ago, but remember little. It would be nice to have the option of either mooring up for a pint at lunchtime, or maybe anchoring/beaching and having a picnic in a nice spot. Any ideas welcome to keep me sane in this last week of work!

Cheers,

Robin

You have so many choices, it is difficult to pick one or two.

Round the corner from Mylor is Restronguet Creek and the Pandora Inn.

If the weather is kind you may want to head for St Mawes - bucket and spade beach, little harbour and lots of pubs. A river to explore.

If it is lively you might go upriver, on the flood, into more shelter. There are loads of grand spots, small beaches, and river scenes to divert you Smugglers Cottage at Tolverne has a pub with small beach in front. Or you could visit the Heron at Malpas, you will no doubt need an engine or oars at some point.

These charts might help:

I'm no expert, but I guess the obvious candidate for that would be the Pandora at Restronguet.

If you see a little gaff yawl moored there with a black hull and grey dodgers, that'll be our erstwhile Kindred Spirit, now sold and due to be moved down there later this week.

Apparently the Pandora was the first pub I ever went to, not that I remember as I was only three weeks old :)

We've sailed with MBH a few times and they are very good, and pretty relaxed about paper qualifications, just give them a ring to let them know you are coming. There are also Shrimpers available from http://www.cornishbluesailing.co.uk/shrimper.html in Falmouth Marina but I've not used them myself.

The Pandora at Restronguet is lovely if busy (but check you have enough water at low tide) as is St Mawes/Percuil River (look out for oyster beds if anchoring) We've anchored off Maenporth beach for ice creams in the right conditions but that requires a tender (provided free by Mylor Boat Hire IIRC) If you just want to anchor for lunch then Channals Creek is pleasant.

We've used Mylor Boat Hire many times, just book ahead. They normally have a couple of Shrimpers too, we normally take one over to the Helford River for the day. Otherwise pubs as recommended.

Make sure you visit the toilet before entering Cornwall ! The toilets at Mylor Harbour are now closed through Cornwall Council cost cutting. Cornwall Council could have a little money spinner by selling incontinence pads on the A30 at the border and Tamar bridge !

The prawns in garlic & chilli sauce at the Heron are not to be missed. Good pint as well.

But a lesson in customer service for the staff, and how to smile, plus a reversal of the personality bypass operation would not go amiss. Real shame as it ruins a pub in a great location.
