I am considering basing my 34 foot bilge keeler on the River Exe. The pilot books indicate that entry/exit should not be attempted in fresh South or South Easterly winds and not at night. Is this realistic or is safe entry possible in stronger winds and/or at night with local knowledge?

I am based there and would not attempt an entry or departure in strong SEs at any time after High water +2. Also the channel is silting up so if you have a fin keeler then I would be very wary of moving an hour or so each side of low water, especially on springs.

A night time entry is different, the only real problem is that some of the buoys are unlit so become a hazard!

Hi David,

I am based on the Exe with a 5'6" draught finkeeler and I know a number of boats with much deeper keels than mine.
True, the Exe is not dredged any more since all commercial traffic ceased around 94/4 but this should not sop you baseing your boat here.
As previously mentioned strong south to south easterly winds make the entrance difficult but certainly not as dangerous as say Salcombe in the same conditions.
Once you have become experienced and knowledgable about the Exe you will enjoy it.
There are a number of clubs who race and cruise far and near, local facilities for repairs maintenance and winter lay up are are all close by and you not have the great expense of marina berthing unless you decide to go into Exmouth dock.
Please PM me if you require any further information.
Regards.

Peter.
