John White the Harbourmaster at Felixstowe has a new website with guidance for getting 'over the bar' as of 31.3.13 www.debenestuarypilot.co.uk which should be useful !
Excellent news, thanks to John White for providing the information.
It looks like the margin of error on the direct line between the buoys has got a lot tighter this year. Not really any less water over the bar but we mustn't stray off that 360/0 transit. Last year we were in and out at HW+-4 on a draught of 4'6" and that looks fine this year as well. We need to work out a pair of transits to use and save a known route on the ipad to follow in bad light, I still shudder at the memory of the night we were very late and crossed the bar in complete darkness, we'd mistakenly remembered the buoys as lit, and only realised our mistake when we got to the Haven, with children asleep down below we were two very stupid skippers. SWMBO has awesome eyesight but it was still a fraught fifteen minutes.
What does 360/0 transit mean please?
Crossed inwards at 17.45 @ yesterday. Strayed a little to the west and got down to 0.3m under keel or 2.3 gross.
Pressure was high yesterday so the rise may have been less than predicted . I haven't checked out the data for Felixstowe pier.
