To the OP - when we sailed in the Aegean we encountered similar behaviour inasmuch as large mobos would deliberately alter course to pass close by, inevitably causing some rocking and rolling from their not insignificant wash. We had no idea why they did it but the attitudes we encountered in harbour led us to suspect that it was some kind of macho ‘mine is bigger/more expensive than yours’ type of thing. The other theory was that they just wanted to provide something for the guests onboard to look at. In reality we will never know and our theories may, of course, be influenced by our own bias but then we are mobo types so our starting point was that we had something in common. It was only as the holiday progressed that we formed a view that there appeared to be a a disproportionate number of knobs amongst the large mobo community out there when referenced against the general population
In the case you describe I am finding it difficult to see any rational navigational reason for the significant course alteration to pass close by so the sightseeing theory is probably not a bad one.
