Planning to spend a week on the crouch and wondered what the fouling situation was like.
Here on the Humber in a mud berth I dont need to A/F as the combination of salt and fresh water seems to keep the nasties at bay, does the same apply on the Crouch or do I need to slip the boat and part with lots of beer tokens. Coming back from the Solent last year I got stuck in Ramsgate for a week and as there was no protection on the hull it got absolutely plastered with all sorts of nasties, talk about a job getting them all off, shame we cant buy glue that's as good!

For a week I wouldnt worry about it, but it does foul up quite quickly if you arent protected. My pal a/f before he went in at Hullbridge and had whiskers after 3 weeks. Dont know what he used but it was certainly noticeable how quick it grew.I went in a week ago but will be pulling out in another week so hopefully it hasnt got me by then. Have a nice stay.N

1 week may be OK, but after 2 there may well be the start of significant fouling. Some years ago I left my tender afloat on the club pontoon for our 2 week holiday to save hauling it in and out every day - day boat sailing then - and was amazed when it came out at the end to find the bottom covered in baby barnacles. They needed quite a lot of pressure to scrape off.

We normally get a coating of brown slime which is easily brushed off, but this year is the worst I can remember for barnacles.
We even started to get mini barnacles on the dinghy from Friday to Sunday.
Has anybody else noticed this recently or is it time to change my antifouling brand?
I hope you'll come and say hello if you see us on Traigh at Priors. There are two other UFOs on Rice & Coles moorings. We could almost have a UFO rally.

Dan

I most certainly will come and say hello Dan. We will be there for the regatta at the end of August and hope to meet some others as well. Do you know if any of the other UFO's will be taking part? I've decided to bite the bullet and slap some poison on the bottom as we may have to leave the boat there if the weather is unkind at the end of the week.

Ted.

Fouling on the Crouch

Much longer than a week and you could probably sell the scrapings off the bottom of your boat to a French Restaurant as a base for a Fruit de Mer !!

Agree about this being the worst year in memory for barnacles. the maiin issue is not so much the hull as them colonising the prop. mine had more resemblance to a brieze block than anything else when i scraped it a week or so ago. lost a good two knots as the engine couldn't reach ful revs.

eight weeks fouling was enough for a major infestation, but a week shouldn't be too bad

if you stay in the marina there won't be any problem anyway as everyone else's antifoul creates a toxic environment

Rather than risk another covering like we had at Ramsgate last year the boat was dried out on the slip last Monday and after a bit of a scrub down a coat of Int. Trilux applied. If the weather is not suitable for the return trip the boat may have to be left there for another week or possibly more so I thought it best to be on the safe side.
