River Conditions

Bit of a yo yo situation below Shepperton weirs. Down 2" yesterday and back up 2" overnight. Has not moved up or down all day today.

Had a trip out today and visited a few old haunts.

This was taken from Bray Marina looking upstream.

Just got this in my inbox.....

"Dear Boater,

With flood conditions on the River Thames expected to improve soon, we are encouraging customers with boats still moored on the river to check the security of their boat moorings if possible. Please do not put yourself or others at risk, your life is more important than your boat.

As water levels decrease there is a risk that some boats may become caught up on the river bank or mooring structures. If you are able to gain safe access to your boat, we’d urge you to check the position and condition of mooring lines and fendering.

Visit our website for more information on dealing with changing river conditions.

As flood water recedes and river levels come back within the banks, the flow rates will increase in speed. Red strong stream warning boards are currently displayed throughout the river and are likely to be out for some time. Our advice to boaters remains not to navigate because the strong flows make it difficult and dangerous. In addition, boat wash can worsen the situation for properties already at risk of flooding. To keep up to date with the current conditions on the River Thames please visit the River Thames Conditions website.

Extremely cold weather overnight means some areas affected by flooding may now be experiencing frozen floodwater. Frozen flood water next to rivers is dangerous and we urge people not to walk on it. It’s easy to lose your footing on ice, and skid toward the river without any way of stopping yourself.

Boaters, walkers, cyclists and anyone working near a river should also take extra care, watching out for ice and avoiding it wherever possible.

The River Thames is currently very high, very fast, and extremely cold, anyone falling in would immediately find themselves in extreme difficulty. If you see someone in difficulty, call the emergency services on 999 immediately.

a 200 quid weekend? to start with....;)

Hi Rich,

I'm pleased to say no chance it will cost me that much as its not a Scorpion with a huge 2 stroke on the back!

There should 24 boats with us as it's the Annual Ribnet Jolly to the Folly.

Our boat is a Ribcraft 585 with the new generation 150 Merc on the back - goes like a rocket ship when you want and purrs along when you don't. Last time when we were out we used about £40 running in it and playing with props.

The only bad bit is the high launching fees and we favour Calshot at £20 inc car parking. Last time I was at Hamble Point we were charged £15 each way on the slip which to my mind is a bit pricey!!

It will make a nice change now the speed limits are in on the tideway so we are hoping for some nice weather!

It's slowly getting better ...

Boveney to Romney and Shepperton down to Teddington now also on Yellow Decreasing.
Most sites are still displaying red 'Caution Strong Stream' boards and most Thames Weirs remain fully open. However, river flow is slowly beginning to decrease, although red boards will probably remain in place at the majority of sites into next week.
The weather forecast is for a couple of dry days followed by light showers, so we expect to continue to see the river flow to decrease.

Just waiting for the rest of the river downstream of Penton Hook to clear for our New Year trip to St Kats....:D

Oh for gooodness sake!

"Likely outlook

The river flow is continuing to slowly decrease although there is heavy rainfall predicted for Friday which may further affect the flows".

What chance of the river conditions site being updated between Xmas & New Year? Used the boat so little this year wondering whether a window of opportunity will present itself.

Pretty good , the lock staff are working , the team leaders are working , so there's no reason for it not to get done.

Barring a giant asteroid wiping us all out in the next couple of days of course.
