Wondering whether to go to the River Axe this Friday evening if wind is South as forecast - gives a better slant from Barry than Watchet. I believe that there are pontoons there so a few of questions

1. Do I need to 'phone ahead or can I just turn up
2. I have read something about the access to the pontoons being covered at HW. Do I need to stay aboard over HW the next day
2. Is the Club open Friday/Saturday night

Hello Don

You dont have to ring ahead but I guess it would be a courtesy.

The walkway to the pontoon covers for a couple of hours over HWsprings only. The floating part of the pontoon is still safe to use but you would need to use the dinghy to get across to the shore.

Neaps this weekend anyway so your main problem will be ensuring theres enough water for you to float off again on Sunday which is a smaller tide than saturday.

Not sure about club openings but some of the members use the Dolphin pub which is a 15 minute walk.

If you go use the up river part of the pontoon as the ground is more level. when we went there were members on hand to help and advise - very friendly folk.

Yep your right ,plenty of water this weekend I think I was looking at last weekends tides. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Makes a big difference to slacks for diving. Might have had 45 mins last weekend, will be more like 15 mins this (West Wales). All academic though, given the way the weather looks.....

Anyway, we'll be sailing tonight!

Youngest son and I have just returned from the Axe. Sun came out(rare sight)so we went over on yesterday afternoons tide. HW level yesterday eve was about a meter below the walkway and our boat with 4 ft draught floated about 1.5 hours each side of HW.

Weston Bay YC have added a new section of pontoon to it so you could get 3 @25 ft boats on at a push with a bit sticking out each end.

Nice sail over yesterday with a gentle breeze and sun. Came back this morning with a variable force 2 behind us still sailed back into Cardiff roads before starting the motor with the price of petrol now the boat has to be going backwards now before motoring /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

Were on the middle section .The new bit is the section with blue barrels for floats.

No problem except on small neap tides when theres not enough water and as mentioned brefore the walkway covers on big springs.

Looked at the sky and forecast around 4.00 and gave up. Sad really as I would like to go back to the Axe - last visit was in a Barry 16 when I was fourteen!

Thanks to all for the advice. Will make it later this year, or the next, or the next..................... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
