River Arun to Arundel

Littlehampton Marina on the outskirts of town seems to welcome only one type of boat. They must be frustrated by the 6-knot speed limit – one was caught on radar and fined £5000! [IMG said:

Had you taken the picture further up you would not have seen a Larson, 120 boats there and about 15 larsons and you got a few of them, in fact a few boats up is a really nice boat.

Littlehampton

Great! brings back many memories. I learnt to sail at Littlehampton over 40 years ago!
I still remember the Arun Yacht club out on stilts. There was a 'put-put' boat ferry that used to cross from the concrete ramps by the yacht club to the landing stage on the town side next to the little cabin that sold lugworm s for bait.
The pontoons were constructed from ex-MOD floating craft with just a wooden grid to walk on... heaven help you if you fell own into them.
I remember learning to tack in or out up the narrow channel at low tide.. certainly refined the technique and taught you the benefit of planning for the tide.
Collecting beach balls blown into the sea by an offshore wind.
Is the Butlins still there? with the 'Wild Mouse' ride on the roof... scared me witless as a 10yo.
Think it's changed beyond recognition now

your going back a while, no Butlins not there its just small amusement park now, with the main Butlins a few miles down the road at Bognor.

A lot of people have said that Littlehampton is the hardest river to berth in, with strong under currents, westerly winds, and a 6.5 knt river if you can moor up there you can moor up anywhere. The narrow channel coming in is still a challenge, when the river is at full flow it is a hell of a place.

AYC recently up graded their pontoons for new ones, although they cocked up with the dredging.

but such is life,

If you go to http://www.littlehampton.org.uk/cctv.html its a bit slow to load and you have to downlaod a codec but it works you may see some old sites you are talking about, look at all 3 cameras.

SP
we still get balls, we were famous a few years ago as a container full of soft toys was washed up and we had monkeys hanging on the pier going out to sea.

Have to be careful what is said, we were told bits, but it was all kept very quiet, he is now suing for unfair dismissal, understand Colin is in middle east now. No not been replaced there is a harbour manager lady called Anne, and a deputy harbour master.

Ship and Anchor marina

We used to be at the Ship and Anchor Marina from 1971 to 1998.

The boat was launched off the trailer using an old farm tractor, but getting back on the trailer was nerve racking with a 6 knot tide running, just had to take a run at it and hope you didn't injure the boat man who was in the water at the front of the trailer.
