Rip off boat insurance

Haven reduced my premium £30 as my boat is ashore this season; I would have liked more discount of course but to be fair the cover includes next year afloat up to July.

I did ask other brokers inc Y Yachts, whose M.D. was very honest in telling me Havens' offer was the best I'd get and go for it !

I was so impressed with his approach I'll ask him again next year.

You are right that Guy from Y yachts is very easy to talk too. He told me to stick with Haven and try him out next year?

The guy I spoke to at Ceta, a real brain of Brain of Britain, he said well we dont know if you have it in the water or not, DOH, yes but if I claim for anything on the water the policy obviously wont cover it and I am commiting fraud, for some reason he could not see this. d

to the contrary - he will have seen fraud attempts many many times. Otherwise reasonably honest people, people who would return a dropped wallet, dont think twice of trying it on with an insurance company or indeed the tax man. Something approaching 80% of mobile phone claims are believed to be fraudulent not to mention all those whiplash claims.

Don't know whether anyone has answered your question or not, I skimmed through but it all seemed a little.....aggressive?
Anyway have a chat to GJW or Basic Boat Liability? The latter do third party only, but that may leave you open to unacceptable risks in tha yard?

I am not being agressive but surely this is very simple, like any other insurance - if you can get cheaper then go there. That is it! Play the market if you believe the company you go with are reasonable when dealing with a claim.

Many yacht insurers cover with little knowledge of who you are or what state your boat is in; there are no MOTs. You do not even legally have to take out insurance nor have a licence! And there are many idiots out there who push the call prices up - why is that?

It is a fact, that the margin on yacht insurance is quite small. If you do not believe your policy is being adjusted to whatever mid term adjustment you report, then change insurers. But they all suffer the same challenge of trying to make a profit.

Tony,

the snag is there are ' boat MOT's; surveys.

If a new insurer insists on one the cost and hassle will far outweigh a small reduction in premium, so check this point when shopping around.

Before i bought my own boat, I sailed most weekends on a friend's boat which had GRP hull and ply decks. We took her out to replace the decks and informed the insurers (Big Bird ring any bells?) that she was in the yard for repairs. She was smashed up by vandals, but the insurers refused the claim on the basis that the boat was "unseaworthy" - so I'm with the OP, some insurers are rip-off merchants!

Applologies to Haven knox johnson

Think I have a happy ending to my insurance problem. When I insured my boat last year, it was the first yacht I have ever insured and got advice from this site and told that Haven Knox Johnson was one of the best and so looked on the net. Somehow i got onto the Cita site which advertised insurance with HKJ and thought no more about it and arranged with them. When I got my renewal for £278 I asked about a discount for being on the hard and they said no. Today I rang HKJ direct and told of the problem with Cita not giving me any discount and HKJ said that although Cita sells their insurance they have no control over what they offer as they are completely different company and although they sell HKJ policies it is up to them what they offer. So, I asked HKJ to quote and they said £180 for out of the water and circa £230 if I was to float her again. So I unreservedly recommend HKJ.

Your friend should have taken that to the Insurance Ombudsman who very likely would have told his insurers to pay up.

Does this mean, if my car is on the road parked I should get a discount, if its in the garage another discount, if I only drive in daylight another...once I drive it the insurance goes back up? not my boat but its insurance.
I pay a set amount all year to cover all risks in or out of water, mine seems cheaper than others on here.
Try Susan Newbold at Bay marine in Cardiff.
Shop around.

Yes: many insurers will charge a lower premium for a vehicle regularly garaged rather than parked in the street, as you perhaps well know. They're insuring against risk: the lower the risk, the lower the premium. They like it that way.

you can get cheaper car insurance for a car off road and undergoing restoration

Yes.There are many insurance policies that allow for garaged/limited mileage or non work related use. There are even some now that use satnavs to spy on where and how you drive.Premiums go up or down accordingly.Probably not long before they send out prosecutions as well.
