Sorry to report the passing of Mike Gates who died last Friday after being diagnosed with late stage cancer earlier this year.
Mike was a friend of the forum and many boaters enjoyed his hospitality for forum meets at Windsor during his tenure as Thames Marinas manager for MDL.

I will communicate funeral details when available .

Sorry to hear. Very sad news. Sincere condolences to the family. Mike was for a long time the face of MDL on the Thames and as said always supportive and hospitable to forumites and berth holders alike.

always a smile and warm welcome if Mike discovered you were nearbye, no matter on a quiet river bank or at some busy hectic posh boat show, even if you could never afford to moor in a MDL marina. OG.
He did have an interesting life long before MDL hove into view.

Mikes tenure extended well beyond the Thames, from the Medway and on out to marinas in Spain and Italy.

Very sad news. Mike always offered a warm welcome whenever we met him and we will miss him.

MDL need more like him, there has been a big hole in MDL's Thames operations since Mike retired a few years ago that they just haven't been able to fill.

Thank you Tony for letting us know this sad news.

We have fond memories of Mike who was always charming and super helpful. He even went out of his way to help us get the mooring we wanted at Hythe after we were told it wasn’t available by the South Coast people. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him.

Condolences to his family.

Re: RIP Mike Gates - FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

I now have details of Mike's funeral arrangements:

Wednesday 21st November at 3:45 pm at Easthampstead Park Crematorium, South Road, Nine Mile Ride, Wokingham, Berkshire RG40 3DW.

Afterwards The Winning Post, Winkfield Street, Winkfield, Windsor, SL4 4SW.

Family flowers only but donations if desired to Thames Hospice. Helen tells me that the nurses who came out to help were extremely kind and caring not just to Mike but also the rest of the family.

I am collating the various messages left here, and will be letting Helen have a
copy of them, so do, please, continue to post your tributes.

Re: RIP Mike Gates - FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Mike was very helpful when I first arrived at Penton. He ran a good, caring, team of people in the office and out on the pontoons, and knew his patch of the Thames like the back of his hand. An old-style, customer-centered manager. Condolences to his family.

Very, very sad news. Condolences to his family.

Always had the greatest respect for Mike. A very genuine and honest man with a style of management sadly lacking elsewhere in MDL.

When I decided to move to the south coast after 25 years at Penton he moved heaven and earth to keep me as a MDL customer. Nobody else seemed interested but he used his influence to make things happen.

RIP Mike. You were one of the good guys.

Re: RIP Mike Gates - FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

A sad passing. We knew Mike for about 18 years, one of nature's gentlemen, always a pleasure to deal with and fun to meet on the MDL stand at Southampton. Our condolences to his family. Pat and Andrew
