Very sad to hear that James/Jimmy/Jim Lawrence passed away a few days ago.

Saw him out sailing his lugsail open boat in Brightlngsea October 2023 then chatted with him in the high street later that day. He was very please with himself for getting out on the water and said that was his last sail of the season...........

Sad, he was the skipper of Marjorie when our scout group chartered her for a week in about 1969.

I was fortunate enough to have known Jim for most of my adult life and it is fair to say that he was probably the last of the Sailormen.
If you haven't read it yet, I would strongly advise getting a copy of his excellent book, London Light a fascinating read and an insight into what life as a bargeman was like!

Pity the photos used in the book weren’t clearer/sharper (maybe the originals weren’t very good). I would have kept the book otherwise.

I finished his book this morning. A really enjoyable read.

His last book "James Lawrence Sailmakers" is due to be published Summer 2024 and can be pre-ordered from the publisher Chaffcutter Books even though it is not on their website yet.
