\"Rio\" video by Duran Duran

Ok, typical post lunch-in-the-pub question. Our otherwise perfect lunchtime watering hole has a video juke box. Someone put on "Her name is Rio" (or whatever it's title is) by Duran Duran (I think). from some time in the eighties (youngsters can stop reading here). The video features some stunning footage of (what I assume to be) a Fife Ketch in the Caribbean, and/or Rio de Janeiro. Including proper saily bits. The shape is right and the dragon is clearly visible. Anyone know which one she is? My guess would be "Altair" as it's the only name I can remember....

It's just called Rio. Why do I know this? /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Don't know for sure, but my guess has always been that the boat's Altair. If not her, then it's something very similar.

If you want entertainment from a Duran Duran video, suggest you try the original, suppressed, video for "Girls on Film", which has topless supermodels pillow-fighting, sliding along greasy poles, falling off, getting covered in feathers etc. etc. Nearly - but not quite - as good as watching film of a classic Fife under sail. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Certainly wasn't 'Drum', Simon Le Bons racer that ended t1t5 up with no keel.

I have a friend who sails occassionally with me. We went to Cherbourg once and waited an hour for him to appear from the cabin looking like Simon Le Bon when we were all parched and looking a bit salty and dressed in fleeces etc.

Memory lane...

Gosh, that's going back a bit! Haven't seen the video for ages, but I think it was shot in Antigua, probably early 1982. All posing and pastel suits. Duran Duran were early pioneers of the lavish music video (remember MTV was in its infancy), and they helped to define a whole new art form.

I wonder whether Simon sails still? maybe some one should nobble him for some money towards our AC bid. :-)

' Eilian' is the last remaining unrestored large Fife, she is indeed in a sorry state at Antigua slipway. There is a story to this and a reason why she has not been restored. Anyone interested in restoring her , I can put you in touch with the owners.PM me

Re: \"Rio\" video by Duran Duran

Thanks, I knew if I asked, no matter how obscure the question, somone would know. Sad to hear about her fate though, but surely a Fife can't languish unloved for long. I propose that we all go out and buy some lottery tickets and whoever wins, spends it on restoring her in time for the SB bash to Cherbourg next year.
