I have a stupid question: Which courtesy flag does one fly on the Rio Guadiana? The border seems to go more or less through the middle of the river (perhaps a bit more on the Spanish side). The one we're cleared into? Both? Portuguese on the left spreader and Spanish on the right when going upriver and the opposite when going down? :-) Juggle flags each time you cross the border? Surely not.

The one you cleared into, if the border is down the middle. Likewise you wouldn’t fly french CF whilst anywhere in the English Channel ... until cleared into France. Great question though haha

Edit: or okay, the courtesy flag of the NEXT place you plan to land...

I went up the river this summer and saw a yacht on the river flying both
Portuguese and Spanish courtesy flags from his right spreader.
Can,t remember which was on top though.
But I remember thinking that he had all bases covered.
Me, I flew the Portuguese flag into the river, and changed to the Spanish flag
in Ayemonte.
No-one seemed to mind !

I fly both on starboard spreader. Alternate 'superior " position monthly to keep the peace! All good fun, never a problem!

Thanks everyone, I guess we'll just fly both, Portuguese on top as that's the side we're coming from and going back to. So far all our dealings with their authorities have been very friendly, they even apologized for interrupting dinner when checking us at anchor outside Lagos. Various guides pointed out that on the Guadiana they're a bit more active - we'll see!
