I am very impressed by Indigo Moon´s contribution! But for knottsgypsy, its a bit like asking someone " how are you?", and getting the full medical history in reply.
I know people who have been to Rio Dulce, though I haven´t, but I spent six months in Brasil and in Venezuela, both places that had a bad reputation for theft, though not for murder, at that time. We lost a dinghy, but had a great time.
And once one is there, where ever "there "is, the alternatives to staying are usually few, and the temptation to defend ones decision by saying "its safe here" is compulsive.
If safety was your primary concern, you would be sat in front of your T.V. with rest of the great majority. If you want to go to the Rio Dulce, then go. It may not be what you hoped for, but life is like that.
We haven't been there either but we know many who have. Apparently most crime is local on local, same as Trinidad and Venezuela. Obviously the incidents were bad but the perpetrators and fences were caught/killed within a few days. Yacht crime is apparently fairly rare there.
I've mentioned before you can check Ccaribbean yacht crimes at www.safetyandsecuritynet.com although the Columbia and Central America page isn't working at the moment. Perhaps somebody stole it.
We have spent the last 2 hurricane seasons in the Rio Dulce, mostly at anchor. It is very beautiful and can be hard to leave.
Have a look at www.riodulcechime.com This is a local news site for cruisers and contains a lot of information.
There are a number of marinas there ranging in price from 150USD to 350USD per month for a monohull, most have their own security (prices exclude electricity which is not cheap) and I would guess 1500 boats + spend the summer there.
Re the security issues. You have to remember this Central America!
But since the incident last summer the river has been very quiet. The incidence of boats being boarded is very rare and I hope it stays that way. Dinghy/outboard security is essential.
In my opinion the Indigo Moon article is only one view of the Rio Dulce
Thanks everyone for your advice and guidance. We have decided to go there and check it out locally for the most recent (and reliable?) update.
Cheers
