Rinsing off Oxalic Acid

Third page ??

On my computer it's PP6 - so I suspect it all depends on aspect-ratio and height of screen.

I've used oxalic acid for 25 years and never had a burn, even with a saturated solution (@ 25C). Whilst I appreciate Seajet's concern, he's probably thinking about another substance.
Indeed marvellous stuff for Fe staining and most organic stains - but as an oxidising agent it will turn black dye to red, weaken natural fibres and adversly affect all but nitrile rubbers (or so I'm assured by Johnson pumps) so don't try and clean most inflatable with it.

charles,

nope, definitely oxalic acid in an off-the-shelf boat cleaner.

All I can think is that since it was around 1992 it might have been a stronger solution than is used now; I have worked in engineering most of my life and have not noticed any particular sensitivity of my skin.

One thing's certain, wear goggles or risk ones' eyesight, forever...

Oxalic Acid

POISON! DANGER! MAY BE FATAL IF SWALLOWED. CORROSIVE. CAUSES SEVERE IRRITATION AND BURNS TO SKIN, EYES, AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. HARMFUL IF INHALED OR ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN.

Using face protection and gloves is common sense, as is not allowing the product to run down your arms.

I have been fine occasionally working with oxalic in both the marine industry and in antique restoration, I don't use it often, in fact very rarely as there are far more effective cleaners / methods out there.

That said, I gave some to a friend recently to enhance a teak table, first comment when I saw him was "It don't half sting on the skin".

To me it is just an itch if I flick some on my arms by accident, a rinse with water and the itch is gone.

I guess folk have a hard time believing that Oxalic caused so much damage to your arms when they have had no severe reactions themselves, but that does not make it safe on skin, your story any less true and the warning any less welcome.
