Rinker 270

Close to putting in offers on a number of boats, just after a few opinions on a Rinker 270 Diesel 2003.

What should I look for, reliability, pro's/Con's what are they like as a boat to be used for overnighting and use on the Solent. Any opinions would be appreciated.
 
These are great boats, and fine for a couple weekending or even a small family. We had a slightly smaller Sunbird, and this was fine for the 3 of us for 3 or 4 days. Diesel even better, if the installation has been carried out correctly. I don' know if any 270's were supplied OE as diesel, the default engine being the ubiquitous V8 gasoline.

I had a 260V Rinker. Older - (mid 90's) and although a nice boat, wasn't great in a chop and build quality wasn't all that. However I think they improved dramatically, in the following few years as when I looked at some early 2000 boats they seemed better.

I agree a diesel may not be a factory build so vital it's been done well and plenty of reciepts although there won't be warranty left, it will give an idea as to the quality of the install.

Thanks for this I think my mind is made up, I have located a place to store it on the Solent, hopefully one more viewing of the boat this weekend with the intention to make and offer. :ambivalence:
 
At the time we have been looking at this type, because its one of these bigger but still trail-able boats,
the sport fisher style models ticked a few more boxes for us, (diving) but for family use I still believe the Rinker is a good choice,
and with diesel engine, it is apealing

do you intend to keep her on a trailer ?
think about what you can do, or where you can go with her behind a LR, Merc or Toyota, 4Wheel Drive
unlimited number of destinations, and many adventures :)

What would something like a 270 + diesel engine ( heavy) + trailer weigh? Somewhat more that 3,500 kg unladen I expect.

I wish I could tow my Four Wins 278 Vista with a D4 in the UK ( as they do in the US). On paper, it'd be too heavy here, even the lighter petrol engine boat is, even with a titanium trailer !

No going to drystack it in Gosport, as I don't have a 4x4 and I live an hours drive from the coast so not a viable option for me, as as has been said this is a big heavy lump to be moving about, I not to sure the wife will be happy with me shouting at here to lift it higher :p

Our 28ft Karnic with twin VP D3 and alluminium Harbeck trailer weighs "on paper" 3450 kg
we have been towing her from Belgium to ao Cornwall, Schotland, Kroatia and SOF.
last few years used her less often, only in south holland, and keep her dry in the warehouse when not in use
you need a good 4WD though, i had a merc GL, and just waiting for a new one to be delivered

Bart,
I have no doubt it was/ is safe with your suitably large 4x4, they tow a lot more than that perfectly safely in the US with the same 4x4s, but it's very close to the arbitrary EU legal weight limit with no fuel, gear etc on board. I wouldn't want to meet a zealous UK VOSA official at a weighbridge if they stopped me when I was towing that !
