Dogs

ooh i am rather worried bout dogs. I got scared by them as a little lad and don't really likem still.

The WORST thing about dogs is when they rush at you andfifty yards back the owner says" don't worry, he won't hurt you!" Yeah right, he wd say that, cos he gives him food etc. I have never yet heard anydog owner say "jeez, my dog's a total nutter, and i have so little control that he's now decided to ignore me an attack you - RUN FOR LIFE!" but surely sometime it wd be appropriate?
 
nobody's perfect. even i am peculiarly susceptible to draughts.

and the use of lower case is typography and internet convention, not grammar. the use of a conjunction at the start of the previous sentence was a grammatical error.

There are many cultural differences between the diverse nationalities of people on this fourm, and many of us assume (me included) that just because we use a common language we have a common set of values.

It is often difficult to put these differences across in the writen word, especially if it is not your native language, and it would be much easier if we were actually speaking to each other.

More tollerance would benefit us all IMHO
 
Ooh! what a great idea. Sure someone must have thought of it already, but if not, can any programmers on here put this together ASAP!

Can certainly start a good snowball fight by email. Choice of weapon - icy, slush, stone inside, etc then choose force of throw, then aim at targets (you get to hide behind tree etc)

Pick up a short term email address, not a public one, and let games commence.

am just SURE that brendan will be able to find a suitable item. In fact, it's a bit rubbish that the new forum software has no such feature. Soggy liberal programmers in california i expect, next version there'll be a "get therapy" button...

I suppose the use of all lower case is the result of 15 years in IT (or should it be it?).

Unfortunately this bad habit, when used by youngsters, spreads to their everyday writing at the expense of grammar which no longer appears either to be taught in schools or corrected.

May I suggest that the more senior members of society might set a good example?

The sooner this slackness can be eradicated the better for our future citizens and their ability to write coherently.

You were very quick to admonish Enseglare, without first finding out anything about him, or indeed giving any consideration to the fact that he may not use English as his first language. Not all nations use the same forms of address in communication.

More to the point however, is that he was a new forumite, who may not have understood the rules and protocls that we use.

It is regrettable that many individuals (many of whom do not speak any other language) are so very quick to administer correction for missuse of their language, or see non-conformity as rude and inexcusable.

Remember this is an open forum with members from the four corners of the world... and not just the UK.

I wonder what Enseglare's first impression of the forum was after your reply.... Not positive a positive one I would guess..
 
Goodness - what a lot or responses to try and read over such a trivial issue!

I personally could not agree more with Derf above - Shakey appeared to have overeacted albeit his motives were genuine.

Shakeys blast - although it may have led to the insertion of a 'please' - could hardly have been seen as a welcoming response by anyone especially a newbie (just like me). But collectively we've all possibly added £1million to the national debt or maybe lost sailing time - by applying our efforts in responding to this thread.

Shakey clearly thinks he was in order, I suspect he won't change.

We'll all waste time trying to convince him otherwise.

Just as long as our American friend realises not all Englishmen will respond with Shakey tone - there is no damage to the UK national reputation.

This is one of the wonders of the forum. I cannot say just how much my day has been enriched (seriously) by learning that ensaglare means a spitter.

I bet tcm had plenty of ensaglares on board when captaining the Stevio 1 to its fate? (forum passim)
 
My tuppence worth:

What seems to be being overlooked is that 'writing' is the medium being used to communicate. Also, this new (relatively) form of 'chat writing' is in it's infancy. There are techniques like using CAPITALS to SHOUT etc., but it should be possible for everyone to recognise that this form of communication will evolve, and everyone has their own, or will make their own style in order to communicate what they mean. (0 for Grammar)

Frankly, taking these postings too literally may cause offence, but let's all give a bit of leeway...

Dutch?

i wonder if enseglare is perhaps dutch or belgian? Many from these countries are very forthright people, and it often taks them no more than five minutes for them to make your acquaintence in the next door berth and explain in no uncertain terms why their boat is excellent if not faultless, and that inthis respect your boat is far inferior. Get used to this directness, and they are fine no-nonsense types.

Alas, we South Africans are also type cast as rude arrogant etc etc... whereas we are just forthright.... somewhat akin to Yorkshire types..

I think Enseglare is Nordic, from what I read earlier in the post..

Anyway Matt, you're pretty direct.. and dare I say may even have some Dutch/Belgian/SA blood in there somewhere...remember Port Solent.....?

The use of a conjunction at the beginning of a sentence may be acceptable as a literay style when you want to emphasize something. But, as a general rule, you are right.
