Rigging

Thanks to all those who replied on my last post, but here's another...
What are the exact differences between running rigging and standing rigging? and what are the benefits to having standing/running rigging? Do these types of rigging only apply to the mainsail, or can they be applicable to a genoa, spinnaker etc... thanks in advance for all replies!

Standing rigging - the bits that don't move, the stays etc

Running rigging, the bits that do move, sheets, halyards etc.

Ideally you need both!

When the "rig" goes overboard you loose the mast, the stays and the running rigging, does this mean the mast is part of the standing rigging?

I could be wrong but I think not. I think the mast is the mast and the stuff that connects to it is the rigging, whether standing or running.
