Quick question on behalf of a friend...
He is replacing some rigging screws on the lower shrouds. He is using S/S closed body toggle and fork type. Question is which end does the toggle go, deck fitting or shroud? Does it matter? I thought toggle to deck fitting...
Thanks

This is a slight tangent-but avoid if at all possible stainless bodied rigging screws. Quality screws have stainless ends/toggles but are bronze bodied, and avoid the frequent problem of thread galling.

And a warning about all stainless Hasselfors screws from a few years ago-the body is machined in a way which builds in stress raising acute angles. As a surveyor I've found several with cracks in the body.

Unfortunately the average yachtsman will have problems avoiding stainless rigging screws altogether however I agree there are good and bad ones due to how some are sourced from factories lacking in basic quality control.

Most of us have learn t to deal with galling and providing the rigging screw is correctly designed and manufactured then a stainless rigging screw will last as long as any other. However others may crack at the body or at the weld between the fork and screw if there is one so you pays your money and takes your chances.

I noticed at a recent SIBS that I had great difficulty finding a supplier of a rigging screw which met my criteria however if I had added bronze body to my requirements I would have gone home empty handed.

Sta-lok, first class quality, reasonable prices, huge choice of sizes and patterns and a great company to deal with. Email info@stalok.com. I have no connection with them just a very satisfied customer.

I Had some a few years ago and some more a few weeks age from S3i
In fact they made up a new set of standing rigging to my spec for quite a lot less than I could fine anywhere else.

No connection Just a satisfied customer.
