A friend sent me a pic of his lower shroud. Its barely 2 years old and was instaled and tensioned professionally. What could be going on ?

The rigger tightened the turnbuckle without preventing the upper fitting from turning with a second wrench. The wire twisted and distorted. This is far to common. He needs to use a different rigger.

Quite possibly it is not damaged, but I would take the tension off the rig and do it over. Let the twist come out. He should also bring this to their attention. This is a serious installation error.

I could, of course, be wrong. But I have seen this before, quite a few times, and that was the cause. The only other logical reason is that it was always that way, and I can't imagine that swage being passed.

Other opinions?

Agreed 100%, that's been untwisted, or maybe bent.

Personally I wouldn't trust it to be undamaged, it's not designed to take load in that condition. I'd be having serious words with the "professional" who fitted it.

That is EXACTLY why I would prefer my old OE overspec high quality rig. Several instances of newish rigging failing these days being reported and not just on here.

I can check the wire/terminals where they are visible easily enough. Every few years I have the wires removed and the hooks/tangs inspected for damage and cracks.

No problems so far. Our boat has a strong keel stepped mast and quality standing rigging supporting a fairly small rig.

You see that inside roller furler extrusions esp where there has been a malfunction and people have got lively with the winch handle. Down to whoever tensioned that rig I suspect.

.

I'm impressed you all saw that it was unwinding. He has two lower shrouds doing this. He watched them slowly unwind while crossing the atlantic ?
Now in the azores having the two replaced and worried about the rest of the rigging.
The rigging was fitted, adjusted and has not been touched since.
There appears to be a bit of a gap around where the cable goes into the swage on all four lowers but the cap shrouds does not have this gap.
It was all done by a fairly respected rigger.

Received a few more pics, pretty much more of the same with unwinding problems.
Sent them to the rigger. He was good about it and said he will certainly look at it all when the boat is back and the boat owner will not be left out of pocket.
