I've just been scammed into buying an outboard engine from www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk. Despite many email correspondences, indicating all was ok - it was not!
The moral of the tale is you cant ultimately trust anything on-line, and the likelihood of been scammed is too high to risk buying things unseen.
below is the sequence of emails, which will hopefully give you a flavour of their sophistication and how easy it is to get sucked-in.
Needless to say, the web-hosts dont do anything about it (just remove ad), and apart from registering the fraud on www.actionfraud.police.uk/, there's nothing else in practice one can do.

Thank you for the update.I will ask my husband to check his account tomorrow after work and i will get back to you with the latest news as soon as i can.The engine needs to be prepared for the road,oil drained/palletized etc.My husband's best friend works for TNT and he will help me to palletize and properly pack the engine for the road.

Thank you for your reply. Does the sale include the prop, which isn't in the picture, as well as all the electrical looms, steering cables, and other bits that I'll need to simply 'attach and go'? Obviously, buying an outboard engine is fraught with dangers, and I'd be most grateful if you could give me some reassurances on any past problems that you may have had.

Hi,
The engine spent half of its life on fresh water lake and the other half on sea.The engine came out of our Fletcher boat.The boat was used for family days out, water toys, water skiing,etc.This is a very reliable engine.It is super quiet and as you would expect is an excellent and reliable workhorse. Its economy is incredible even flat out.The engine has always been flushed with fresh water after being used and always correctly stored when not in use.It has been always treated right,run correctly and serviced regularly.I am prepared to send it via a courier but I must insist on having the appropriate insurances.To be honest I would prefer cash on local collection but can arrange delivery at extra cost.Insurance to full value is a must so delivery will cost £125.

Also, the ad says 'fresh water use only' - how does that work on the Isles of Scilly?!

The engine is still available for sale and local pick up/viewing/testing,etc in St. Mary's, Isles of Scilly.Local pick up is welcome and encouraged.Viewing/testing only by prior arrangement ( a suitable time for viewing would be during weekends).So if you are interested in a viewing/testing just drop me an e-mail and i will arrange a viewing.
