Richmond says no to Queen's Jubilee barge Gloriana

Sadly, I concur. It's a POS, being punted whoreishly up and down.

But has no purpose...

Design exercise which did the job it was built for which was to demonstrate to the world that we still have the skills to construct such anachronistic projects.
However should you need an aircraft carrier, tanker or bulk carrier ?
It really needs to go into the Maritime Museum in nice glass case or perhaps we could give it to Mr Putin as a sign of our affections :)

And Richmond Council will not have to waste £1 million on the project now!

However, Hounslow Council want to house it......

The housing development that will replace it when the project fails will not be worth nearly as much in Hounslow.

As for the BBC's accuracy - "A public consultation was held on a proposal to give Gloriana a permanent home at Twickenham's former Orleans House boatyard on the river Thames." - I have never heard of any "Boatyard" in Orleans House.

There are plans to build a boathouse at Beale Park to house Consuta steam launch and another - wouldn't that be a good place for Gloriana.

The rowing there is very nice......

By 'boatyard' I think they mean 'private moorings' and 'row boat hire'.

Heaven forbid the rotten borough of Hounslow gets it. Gloriana deserves better than that, even if it was built in the sh*thole in the first place.

Key opportunities for significant use of Gloriana will be nearer London although we know she has ventured as far up as Henley.

Whatever the pros and cons of the original decision to build her, the fact is she does now exist and is, arguably, a fine example of British craftsmanship and the traditions many of us hold dear. I believe she is owned by a trust (?) in which case they really do need to do the spadework to find a home for her and ensure she is maintained for the foreseeable future.

Indeed and that rest with the borough of Hounslow..it was built on their turf

+1 to the above.
Having just spent 4days in St Kat's for the classic boat festival she was one of the star attractions, maybe not with the boating fraternity but certainly with the general public and the tourists.
Not even remotely near the top of boats there for me but she certainly grew the crowds and was given a prime position in the centre basin.

But that would mean putting her downstream of Mogden Sewage Works and lifting her out or moving her to the non tidal side during the drain off.

Mat,
surely any Hounslow site is FULLY tidal.

FWIW I'm guessing Hounslow would be thinking Brentford in the canal just above Thames Locks, if there's any room left there after all the recent developments?

A.

Quite right Alan, my mistake. Although it does become a stretch of mud at times.

Perhaps these plans will include Gloriana?

The leader of the council names Brentford as the location

I suspect they may be using Gloriana and its proposed visitors centre as leverage on the marina deal and the removal of the liveaboards behind Watermans.

All our Yesterdays or Antique Boat Show ?

.

Its a standard wood boat of the type probably still being constructed and used all round the world .

The fact is that she could have been knocked up on Turkish/ beach by a couple of blokes with an aze and chalk line at a tiny fraction of the cost without the use of CAD computer design office and enough staff/electric tools to fill B&Q megastore. ?
:)

All a load of irrelevant tish tosh - and anyway, the Turks seem to be better known as breakers these days rather than builders.

Perhaps you could persuade the good Burghers of Chatham to offer Gloriana a home ? She would be a worthy addition to the Historic Dockyard and might provide some slight recompense for your total failure to repel the Dutch in 1667 - although I note that Upnor did offer up some token resistance ! :D:D:D

PS - not such a bad idea, really !
