Just how much earlier can you get out into river if you use lock.
From memory not really worth the time saved, maybe half an hour before barrier lifts ?

Hi depends on draft of boat. I have 1 m and can navigate downstream of the lock up to two hours before low tide, so this gives 20 hours in the day I can get through rather than 8 hours. That said better to plan to go through when open. Saves money and time

Have been through lock a couple of times with own boat and merrily bounced down :) but have the big advantage of a nice sold keel below props.
Boat we need to get out of river has no keel just the sterngear to announce you have touched bottom.
Sounds like going through poss an hour earlier than barrier which would be def worth having plus giving a bit more water in river than bare minimum.
Trying to gain as much daylight as poss at other end of journey .

I have a keel too, so not as big a risk, you will be okay with water levels as they are now an hour before opening. You can call ahead so they have them open. If you have a chart plotter you can follow the channel worse bit is a water pipe under the Thames jsut by the Brentford marina which is marked on the chart.

I use the lock when in slow boats, you certainly get out at the soonest opportunity, and just stay in the middle apart from the first bit, which the lock keeper will duly inform you of, regardless how regular you are....

It's handy for St Kats narrow locking window, assuming your draft is less than 3' and you don't mind punching a fairly strong tide by local standards! Never had an issue personally...

Thanks for all comments.
Just checking with an old log entry .................
About 2.5 hours from Richmond to Tower Bridge bearing in mind weekend, taking in possible rowers and other speed restricting traffic. Sound about right ?

Hi I think that is more than fair if you can keep SOG of around 6 knots. Just watch out for PLA Notice to mariners as there are some pre Boat Race events on the river which may slow you down. I have been trying to do the journey the other way to Penton Hook for some time hopefully will do this weekend

Only one Red up at the moment

I've been down to the river every day and it's still flowing like the clappers. The river was so high this afternoon the towpath at Richmond was submerged, up to the door of the White Cross and considerably reducing the bridge clearance.

Cheers for that.
Think a trip across Chertsey bridge for first hand view on way to Marina will be in order.

Steady on , guys.
Richmond is tidal and there have been some very high tides of late which would have happened regardless of the levels and flow in the non tidal above Teddington.
According to riverlevels.uk the levels at Penton Hook and Shepperton are now within the usual range for these locations.
There remains a single red board warning for the PH to Chertsey stretch which could be due to local conditions or possibly an oversight.

The next closure on the Tidal sections is between Putney Bridge and Chiswick Bridge for the Women's HORR on Saturday 05/03 so you should be fine for this weekend.

We are in the midst of the spring tides a.t.m. which is why people were reporting some flooding up at Richmond. It's pretty standard up there during the springs. Anything above 6.9 at Strand-on-the-Green and it floods at Richmond.
