RIB\'s or Rigid\'s

I'm trying to decide whether to buy a cheapish RIB, or a rigid boat, ie. a Jeanneau cap 400, or one of the Pioner range like the Viking 15. I live in west Cork and would use it in and around the coastal waters visiting the Carberry Islands etc. any views?

I guess it depends on your planned use. If fishing, then probably the rigid.. I you are you going to trailer it, possibly the rib which will be lighter. More info on use would help us.

Re: RIB\'s or Rigid\'s, choose your pleasure

Hi Colin, I've always gone with Ribbed for ultimate pleasure, but if you are not into rubber go with the Jeanneau cap which affords good protection from unwanted happenings. Pioneers and Vikings have well documented bad behavourable characteristics when visiting islands though and should be avoided.
Hope this helps

Re: RIB\'s or Rigid\'s

The advantage of RIBS is they have low weight and a v low centre of gravity, they're (virtually) unsinkable, and at rest/low speed, the tubes give the boat some stability in beam waves.

The advantages of deck boats is they have more internal space, and no tubes to puncture or lose pressure.

As with all boats, it's horses for courses

Re: RIB\'s or Rigid\'s

Thanks a lot for the opinions. I guess the main use would be exploring the area, a bit of fishing, and on good evenings, dropping everything, and getting to the Islands fairly sharpish for bbq's etc. But with my limited budget of €8/10k, it seems that a decent RIB is out of reach, hence the mention of a rigid version......and the internal space issue of a RIB comes into play when I have friends aboard (potentially 4 adults and 3 young children)....what to do!!

What about a bowrider it would certainly have the room for your passengers and you would get a decent one for your budget.http://www.boatshop24.co.uk
