Rib white Russian chi harbour

Jeese i hope this isn't going to be a trend on here. There would be no room for any other post if we all came here complaining we got cut up. Ill have to mention it on the car and truck forums i frequent, maybe we can all start posting on people pulling out in front of us there...oh wait, we already have a rant section:D

Count yourself lucky that this is all you have to worry about in life;)

I could start posting the reg numbers of the vehicles that cut me up when I'm cycling. There's normally at least one each ride.

I wouldn't normally post but this was particularly close - closer than I would race my dinghy against other racers and we cut it pretty fine!

There's plenty of "room" and if u don't lie the post then don't read it.

Er. Not out there it isn't !

You havent really told us just where 'out there is'

From my experience I feel that most mobos, sailing boats under power , ribs, dive boats, harbour masters treat it as a narrow approach channel from HISC to Bar beacon. 99% boats pass port to port(save the area where the channel joins at HISC.).

Sailing in this area needs to be done with extreme caution as you have found.

For safety reasons I would not sail in this channel.

At low water a mobo selects a course through the deep water avoiding the charted shallows and will follow it , a lot of mobos will not expect a boat to be sailing in/out to impede them as long as they stay to starboard (which is where I guess the RIB thought he was).

Again not attempting to take any blame away from the RIB, he was at fault.
Just attempting to explain why he did it and what you can do to avoid it next weekend !

sorry - should've said - 1/2 way between West Pole and the Bar Beacon

We obviously go out at different times - that's not my experience!

Not extreme ...

Why not? Especially when I can sail the same course/speed as when under motor ... I'll admit we put the Genoa away if we want greater visibility ...

It wasn't really low - I have no idea where the RIB thought he was - but he was no where near the starboard side - or even heading towards a mark ...

Again not attempting to take any blame away from the RIB, he was at fault.

It's tempting not to avoid it next time ... ;)

Same reason why I reduce speed passed schools and ice cream vans but we are all entitled to our own risk perception and what one sees as an unacceptable risk is apparently accepted by others.

Thats why accidents happen and the reason why the prisons are full I expect !

Out of interest, seeing as you are claiming Bar beacon to west pole as open waters, would you mind if I plane passed you ?

I ALWAYS SLOW DOWN TO REDUCE WASH IF another boat is sharing the channel, well before the line from Eastoke - concrete barge wreck where the speed restriction starts.

genuine question as I feel in a minority slowing down out there and I wonder if it is really necessary.

Fine :)

....he was heading straight out then suddenly altered course to cut across our bows...

I'm a bit with Ricky on this one.

What you describe has happened to me in Chi Harbour on more times than I care to remember. But with raggies, or more to the point dinghy sailors being the culprits.

Whether the rule book says it's okay or not, is beside the point, as a bit of common sense in such situations should prevail.

Interesting to see what happens when the boot is on the other foot though:-)

However, in Fireball's defence, I saw some dreadful seamanship in Chi Harbour on Saturday and in each case, I'm ashamed to admit, it was a motor boat ( RIBs / small speedboats) that was the cause.

Also, in DAKA's defence, the channel around East Head & the channel down to Itchenor, are considerably narrower than they were last year, athough I don't don't exactly where your incident took place.

I wouldn't beat yourself up over this - Life's too short.

Chichester can be a stressful place to be, if you let it get to you.

Why not? everyone else does! :p

Technically there is no speed restriction there so no reason why not - but it would be up to the individual skipper to decide if he was acting in a sensible manner ...

It was out near bar beacon, I think it must have been a calm day and you know what it is like , the harbour raggies decide it will be nice to pluck up courage , achieve their life times ambition and spend the day sailing out to sea round bar beacon and back.

Im surprised he hasnt complained about the wash, the RIB must have been going very slow.

Unfortunately there are prats in all camps - sometimes we just make the wrong call and "get in the way" - I don't have a problem with that as long as the error is acknowledged (works both ways!).

I did a stint in a patrol boat for fed week a few years back and watched as one of my "colleagues" roared past us and up Chi channel at well over the speed limit - just to find out where the front of the race had got to ... why they didn't just radio the patrol boat that was sat there I don't know ... !! ;)

I've sailed there for long enough not to worry about it too much .. :)

Last season it went a bit wrong East of Cowes. Very busy, and I thought that I had a clear path through at planing speed with enough separation. Then a smaller yacht emerged from behind a larger one, and the gap I was aiming for turned into a "closing" gap and shrunk dramatically.

There should be some universal signal for "Oops, I didn't mean to get that close, and if I had dropped off the plane, the wake would have been even larger".

I thought there was one......

You unbutton your shorts, turn away from the raggie
bend over with your hands in your pockets :D
