We have really enjoyed having our 4m Searider this summer but it has been a hassle to tow. I would like to get a rib tender for the bathing platform and would like a bit of advice. We were looking at something around the 3.1-3.2 size with a 15-20hp on the back. I don't have a passerelle or crane and wondered how realistic I (+SWIMBO) am about dragging something this size onto the platform via Hurley davits? I have seen the Hurley H3o system working quite well but wonder if that is overkill. I would also appreciate recommendations on rib/engine combinations - it would be used mostly for ferrying kids and dogs plus buzzing about for fun and possibly ringoing for the kids. Weight is obviously going to be key!

We have a Ribeye 2.6 with a Yammy 6 hp on Hurleys on our platform. I can just about pull this up on my own, but it is not easy. With 2 of us it is not a struggle. I doubt we could pull anything much heavier up, 10 hp 4 stroke would be a stretch.

yes I am interested in Hurley davits and had a good look at Rafiki when she was in Plmouth , I know you have two transom doors but am I right in thinking there is just enough room to squeeze past the tender and transom ? I am hoping to have a look for any deals when at the boat show, but my budget would not allow me to buy both davits and a rib so I was wondering if it is possible to initially mount my slatted floor tender on hurley davits designed for a rib ? Lastly the bathing platform on my phantom 38 is quite narrow does anyone know if hurley davits will still fit on a phantom 38 - many thanks

Rob - I have the Walker Bay Genesis too (20hp mariner engine). Great bit of kit, and the hull is plastic rather than GRP so it's lighter to man handle than a conventional GRP rib.

That said, you will need something to help get it on or off the platform - it's a struggle as a two person lift...

Happy to show you if you're ever up this way again :)

I don't think your bathing platform will be deep enough iirc. Yes, if we position the tender correctly you can get across the transom on Rafiki.

What size is yours Ross and where did you get it? I remember a trip in it in search of batteries.

Ah yes, the saga of the exploding battery!!

Mine is the 310. The only difference between it and the 340 is the length of tubes aft of the transom - the interior size is identical on both. The extra tube length allows a heavier (more hp!!) engine to be used. The 310 is rated at 20hp, the 340 will take double that. It was from a dealer on the south coast - can't remember who as they delivered it by road to Windsor for me. I should be on the boat tomorrow, so I'll see if I can find the bill of sale.

I tried to get something (Hurley Davits - I already have standard davits) to fit on my Squadron 43 (which also has a narrow swim platform) but no such luck. We leave the engine on the dinghy and I thought the Hurley davits would be easier.

Thanks Ross,
I have found a dealer just up the road from where we keep the boat. Will go and have a look soon.

Not sure of the difference in size of the bathing platforms if any but we have Hurley Davits on our Targa 38. We only have a 2m tender on ours and the boat could take a slightly bigger one. The only faff we seem to have is finding a suitable anchor point to tie the tender down as the Davits don't lock in place. They came with the boat and I've just nearly fallen off my seat when I saw the cost of them on eBay. There's nothing complex or sophisticated about them.

I use a pair of rachet straps to tie down the tender. There is also a ring on the bow that carries the painter, to make fast to the mothership or cleat.

We use ratchet straps also but somehow one worked itself loose and decided to jump into Sourhampton water the other week. Now that was a heart in mouth moment as I had a look under the bathing platform to see if had damaged a prop. Luckily all was fine. So now I am totally paranoid about strapping the thing down properly!
