More questions..........

So, we pick the RIB on Wednesday, when I spoke to GJW who the mobo is insured with, they will cover for use on water and whilst being towed with the car for an additional £270!

I need insurance to cover me fully comprehensive whilst the RIB is being towed with the car, for theft whilst left at the marina, in the water or at home and for third party liability.

The RIB, outboard and trailer total value is £5000.

Any insurance recommendations gratefully accepted.

Cheers
Rob

Does the marina not cover theft of boats on their insurance?

Does your car insurance cover the towing risk?

I can’t check at the moment, but I think my NFU policy has a whole section on that.

The car insurance only covers third party, I need the whole outfit covered for damage, theft and third party whilst being stored at home, boat yard and whilst afloat.

I've never heard of any marina covering boat against theft - is that really a thing?

Car insurance will cover the road traffic act requirements: harm to third parties, but won't cover the load falling off the trailer, reversing into a wall etc.

@harvey38 - did you not think £270 was reasonable, or was there an element of the cover missing? RIB insurance usually depends on whether it is above / below some magic number for "design speed" - I think it is 25 mph (statute miles not knots) - but small ribs and o/b are highly nickable and can do quite significant harm to people in the water so I would think its probably the right ball park - but if its your mobo's tender I'd hoped for a bit less!

@ylop £270 was in addition to the mobo premium as the tender, that didn't include any risk being trailered on the either 😳

Still not quite sure what you are saying - your OP said that was for towing it, this says its not! But I assume you are looking for a better price! I've sent a few people over the years to look at Visicover. Their pricing is "interactive" so you can see what effect various options / changes has on the policy. e.g. who you let drive the boat, where you define its region on operation (you can literally draw on a map), where the boat is kept, etc, I saved over £150 just by unselecting things I was never going to use but that were build in to other people's offers by deault. The only "downside" is their standard T&Cs expect you to lift out for an annual inspection - you might already be doing that or you can uncheck that box and see what exclusions/premium impact it has.

Interesting thread. Our 3.1m aluminium hulled RIB with 15hp outboard is our tender and kept on davits so I have simply listed it on the main boat insurance and not really considered that it might need its own insurance. Still not sure if it does but something to consider I guess.

Small boat insurance usually covers towing. It might be worth looking at a stand alone policy for the RIB rather than as the big boat's tender.

Well, I finally got something sorted but not ideal!

I insured it with Navigators and General for £130 which give me theft/damage cover whilst at home, towed behind a car, in a boat park and whilst being used on the water.

It does not cover it for theft if left moored anywhere!

If my MOBO insurance was with them, the RIB would be covered whilst moored as well.

As this resolves most of my issues I'll go with it for the time being. As GJW hiked up their prices at the last renewal and N&G quoted a reasonable price, I'll get them covered together at MOBO renewal time in October.

I have also heard of this. A friend was getting a berth for a RIB in a private marina, thinking his insurance would be ok...NO. In fact he could not find insurance that covered a 5 meter rib while on a marina berth...go figure.

Where do you live.

Car insurance is fraught with problems and while it may be covered while towing and against others third party liabilities, the issues come in the details listed as small print. What is covered if you leave the boat attached to the car while you are not with it (going shopping for provisions) amd what if you hit a pothole and the trailer tips? these are all questions you need to ask and ideally get the answers in writing. Remember all insurers are crooked and employ solicitors and full legal firms to work for them and they stay just this side of the line generally.

Would you be better insuring the boat as an entity in its own right and totally seperately of the towing vehicle and covering every eventuality as you only find out many things after an incident has occured and if you are in a marina then fully check their public liability insurance, and link them together and understand who insures what and who is liable for what.
If you have a qhestion them ask it irespective of how silly it seems and remember vicarious liability and take this into consideration.

That's what I ended up doing but not insured whilst moored 😒
