There seems to be an in-built opposition to any new civic works in this country.

Indeed. Old post offices were grand, splendid buildings - now sold off with post office counters lurking at the back of shops, or compare a Victorian school with the rubbish built nowadays, or look at the self-interested whining over HS2. It all says something about the value we place on societal enterprise.

This has yachting relevance, because we have also, by and large, turned the marine infrastructure and its development over to private interests. Compare the ludicrously expensive gated marinas around the UK to the much cheaper and, in ever sense, more accessible marinas of France.

Good for Rhyl. I did a show there a couple of years back, and it was a pretty bleak place, in need of a boost. I'm glad to hear that things are moving.

Can't speak for others but from my point of view Rhyl has gone from a bohemian backwater where the sailing club would sort you a mooring if you bunged the RNLI a few quid, to a closely supervised, restricted port with no significant improvement in facilities ( pontoon hookups, deep water berths etc.).
I'm all for developments if the demand is there - a marina at Gallows Pont would be excellent, but the infrastructure at Rhyl costs just the same as at Gallows or Conwy but there's one key difference - no one wants to go there. How many visited when the harbour was free? I never saw another visiting boat in my half dozen or so overnight stops

Great - was not a fun entrance last time I was there (15 years ago, blimey!) the only downside as I see it is another pesky offshore wind farm on its way, where's that gong to be then?

Eventful time in Denbighshire – coast and country

The spotlight will be on Denbighshire later this month as a feast of activities are arranged to mark two historic occasions for the county.

Friday, 30 May is the start of 2 days full of celebrations to mark the official opening of Rhyl Harbour, a £10.5 million regeneration project that is breathing new life into the west end of Rhyl.

Centrepiece of the development is Pont y Ddraig, the iconic pedestrian and cycle bridge that spans the Clwyd Estuary and links the communities of Rhyl and Kinmel Bay.

The major development of the harbour also includes a public square and quayside building to create a hub for the harbour, the surrounding dunes and beach areas.

The development also includes new quay walls with pontoon facilities and a full size slipway, together with a mooring pontoon in the channel for an additional ten boats.

There is a secure compound for boat storage with lifting facilities and cradles available. The lifting and storage rates are competitive, Arthur Davies is the Harbour Master and can be contacted on 01824 708400.

Friday, 30 May is also the day the Queen’s Baton Relay comes to Denbighshire, as part of its journey to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. Denbighshire is only one of a few authorities in Wales to be selected to be part of this historic relay.

Depending on the weather, IoM for practice and watch the RGB Weslake wup the big boys, then a quick trip to Rhyl for the celebrations, dress overall, make a bit of a show!

The harbour of Rhyl has been rejuvenated. A new cycle bridge has been built and on the back of that a new slip, pontoons and storage yard have been built.
I was there today, the new HM is Arthur Davies, tel 01824 708400. Lift outs are at £10 a metre, half the price of some other places here in N Wales. Winter storage will be very competitive as well.
They had just launched a 40ft Jeanneau this morning before I got there.
The channel has been dredged to 1.5mtrs and it is all looking good. Rhyl is on the up and up, we have spent millions there and this morning it was magnificent in the sunshine!

For I minute I was excited , however a mate has just rung up and those pontoons in the picture dry at low water, so still a drying harbour. I assume the 40' jeanneau left at hw post launch?

Yup, sorry for the confusion, still drying, the Jeanneau did leave at around high water. If storing for the winter just plan for a couple of hours either side of hi water to enter and lift.

Traveled from Liverpool to Conwy and Anglesey a few times but only needed to stop in Rhyl once with malfunctioning outboard on an old boat of ours and lights that just didn't. I was even more of a wimp back then and the entrance (from memory and with a shaky outboard) seemed long with a sneaky dog leg at the end which came up just as the engine coughed and died again.

Heard a second hand 'story' - which means it may or may not be true - of one trip from L'Pool to Menai recently needing an escort past the windfarm. In defence of the harbour, we had a very friendly tow from a fisherman on his way to the IOM on the way back out (just to be on the safe side, although we had fixed the engine overnight) and just as we approached the cardinal buoy we dropped the tow and were escorted by a pod of Dolphins.

Hi all, I am not a tooth sucker but the tale of Rhyl reminds me greatly of the 'regeneration' under SRB2/4 of Newhaven one of the crapiest towns in the southeast. I have lived here for over 20 years and was heavily involved with regeneration issues as chair of Newhaven Community Development Association. It was alleged that £47 million was spent over around 10 years and Newhaven is still the crapiest town in the southeast with the biggest gap between house prices and average incomes in the country. At least Hastings, its only challenger, is making great strides so well done to them. And the marina, if you can call it that, charges similar amounts to Brighton so I am lead to believe.
