Rhyl marina? Any one been ?

Used to be a very small harbour with a bridge and not a lot of space for turning and little free wall space. When I was up there and passing to or from L Pool I often thought about going in but entering there with a following wiind or with a strong tide behind was not appealing so never went in. I will be interested if they actually have any visitors moorings now or whether the whole upgrade is to benefitjust local boats in the same way that the pontoon at the end of Beaumaris Pier is only for the trip boats!

As I expected a look at their website shows the pontoon is for the benefit of boats in the harbour AND ADDITIONAL PICKUP FACILITIES FOR THE TRIP FISHING BOATS. No mention of visitors moorings and it seems more to do with the cycle trail and a bridge over the river than any new facilities for visitors. Its a pretty naff place anyway and full of oiks throwing bottles and things into the harbour, not sure I would want to go there now anyway.

It isn't in principle. They do have priority during the day and there is a "piermaster" with whom you can make arrangements but the problem up till now is that nothing is published and as the access gates need a card it is next to impossible to overnight. I believe that there was a meeting this last week in Beaumaris on this very subject

I would not hold my breath as log as the "beaumaris mafia" is still in control there!

For historical reasons I can understand the cynicism but I am aware that representative of boat owners in the area were specifically invited . Last summer we used the facility and found the "piermaster" extremely helpful. There are times when funding supported by EU grants can be helpful.

As I understood from a recent call I made to the Assistant harbour master its a drying harbour so would need a boat that would be happy on the mud-- have I misunderstood?

i looked on the net it said it would be a 100 berth marina i have seen about 30 pontoon berths with electric but does look like it dries out ,could they put gates in with the river topping it up dont know but 10 mil does not go far

No, it's basically a drying creek that opens up into a bit of a mud basin. Rhyl does not have a good reputation as a town these days either so I would be a little concerned about vandalism & theft.

Carry on a few miles to Deganwy or Conwy if you want a marina - or go on a mooring in the river (there are pools that don't dry out) if you want decent views. For safer & more sheltered waters go to Port Dinorwic or Victoria Dock (Caernarfon). There are also sheltered deep water moorings in the Straits, but they are mostly a bit of a dinghy trip from any suitable launch spot.

Sorry, a bit late to this (been away):

Rhyl is still a harbour, not a marina. It dries, and is very muddy. There have been plans mooted to build a marina, but AFAIK, nobody could be persuaded to back it. Most of the £10M has gone to rebuilding the harbour wall and fitting some sort of lifting bridge across the entrance for a cycle path (as the existing steel bridge has listed building status, or something, so they couldn't graft a foot-bridge to the side of it).

Not my photos, but these show it as it is currently:

For some reason, the architect's 'vision' pictures are always done at high tide....

There are new moorings, but the harbour is usually very crowded, so I don't know whether there will be any available. Generally too far from town for all but the most determined druggies / oiks on holiday, but it isn't unknown for them to swim / wade out to boats. Heavily tidal entrance that pretty much dries every day.

it isnt really a harbour.its a mud creek.and really the council had no right to rip everyones moorings up and replace them with theres to charge everbody 400 pound a year to rent, then to spend as you say 10 mil on a pointless bridge.if they had brains they would be dangerous.
