Hi,

Believe it or not but a lot of work has gone on at the new marina in Rhodes this winter, and is still going on. I took some photos while walking by earlier today (22/2-2014) to share on the forum. Please note that this is the main pleasure boat marina which is between the ferry terminal and Zefiros beach. There are also plans for a working marina with a boatyard just south of Rhodes close to Liddle and A1. Nothing has happened there. The latter is also where you will find a Gipsy camp, and consequently it is not advisable to go into that "unfinished harbour" or to anchor nearby. An earlier thread spoke about Gipsy burglaries and I think some people got the two marinas mixed up. The pleasure boat marina in town has no known risk for Gipsies as far as I am aware.

Hi Jim,

No. 4 is where I took the photos and where they have been working this winter.
No. 5 is planned to be a "working marina" with a boatyard. That is where the Gipsy camp is. No work is going on there.
Zefiros beach is just South of No. 4, and it is generally a good anchorage (except in N = swell to SE winds)

We have been robed ( 2009 ) while anchoring in the middle of the “Gipsy “ nr 5. We ware just 150 yards away, visiting friends on an other yacht.
Two fifteen year old “Kids” swam to our boat, coming from the opposite direction from where we ware chatting with our friends. The boys used polystyrene fish crates to hide there heads and transport the stuff they stole. The laptop and an external hard disc contained valuable data, all gone. Phones, money and some jewellery could be replaced, the data on the laptop and hard disc not.
They offered me the chance to buy my stuff back, could not guaranty the electronics still worked and asked a ridicules price.
After the robbery two attempts ware made to board our boat again, I could keep the gang off by motoring circles around the anchor. Only one guy had the nerves to clime onto the boat, a handful of sea sand in his face was enough to stop his attack. Have to say I had some sort of war with the burglar gang.
After they understood I was not going to buy, they became extremely hostile, and since our boat is easily recognisable best thing was to leave Rhodes for a few months.

Whilst anchoring in the New marina ( Nr 4 ) before the last start of the works I have seen at least one yacht visited by Gipsy “kids “ No security then.

Anchoring outside Mandraki marina is ok in summer, just don´t leave your dingy on the little beach. It will take off for Egypt, guess why and who.

Mandraki marina is safe.

The reason for us to use the “Dangerous “ nr 5 harbour is that back then it was the only safe place during SE storms. Mandraki is safe also but was always full.
Could be different now.

BTW: if those heaps on the photos are archaeology stuff, then the new marina could become archeologic too.
