I imagine that the play in the tiller connection would make it well nigh impossible to steer a good course astern! Well done for achieving what you have. That's definitely one to address as soon as possible before it gets to the '45 degrees of slack' point and starts to rotate freely.
Once that's fixed you can start going astern with more confidence until, if you have a nicely unbalanced large rudder, the rudder angle gets overly large and the tiller sweeps you to the pushpit and pins you there. DAHIK! ;0)
