I Thank all of you that has responded to my post I appreciate the information alot but I Guess I dont understand the solution to fixing the problem of the reverse polarity. The power worked fine were we have the boat in the summer had no problems with reverse polarity at all this just started when we brought the boat back we tried to hook the shore power up to a few differnt power supply's and niether of them worked. We used the power there a few times before with no problems and the mechanics there have no clue how to fix the problem I was wondering if the boat boat ride back to were we keep it may have jared a wire loose if that would cause this problem any addiotnal information that you could give would be great.

Thanks

Had a similar thing when the element in our immersion heater went.No idea why,put a new one in and all tickety boo.The only other tripping problem we had was when the earth wire between the ships plug and the selector switch got a bit corroded and built up a resistance.
Probably of no help, but if your struggling worth a look.
Regards, Al.

Start again,
Do you have reverse polarity ?
If you have, does the warning light come on?
Does the RCD trip as soon as you plug in?
If you reverse the polarity does it put the fault right?

Further to Halcyons post...

You have established you did not have the problem at some place you had the boat.
With this boat... have you ever plugged in to power in the marina where you are having this problem?
If so...did you have the capability of testing polariity, and was it correct?

Sorry if the question sounds kind of basic, but some rather basic parameters have to be established to troubleshoot any problem.

If you have no clue how to fix the problem, then get yourself an electrician to do it for you. The tripping out you are getting is the safety circuits working, and if you are based in the UK and no other boats on your pontoon have this problem - it indicates you have a fault somewhere. That need checking out properly.

There are some things where it is sense to risk an amateur job to save money but mains electrics on boats (and gas) are not the ones.

Sorry if this sounds a bit pious, but I think its daft the way people come onto these forums asking for help from individuals (like me) who have more opinions than expertise. Often its legal issues. Am waiting for the first poster to seek our advice on brain surgery !

Fully agree with you, but equally there are quite a number on the forum work in the appropriate field with experience that they can offer.

I am sure you are right, but the prob is that none of them can look over his shoulder when he's working and say " no - not that one. The red one over there!". If you dont understand what you are doing, then you cant spot errors / work through the problem.

Were are you going to draw the line in giving and receiving advise ?

I know of cases were someone has screwed a bracket to a bulkhead, screw was 2 mm to long and went through bulkhead and insulation on a live cable, do people stop fitting toilet roll holders?. Have looked at boats that have nearly caught fire due a bad crimps on 12 volt dc connectors, should we stop advise on 12 volt dc stuff. What if someone miss interpites a col reg thread, takes the wrong action resulting in a collision and the boat sinking, your not looking over his shoulder.

Should we have a list of safe advise and do not offer advise, and who is going to draw it up, and police all the actions of all the boat owner's on the forum to make sure they only use the correct person to do the job ??
