So, having had a couple of weeks in this lovely island of Malta, JW is heading back to Spain.

Huge thank to Poweryacht for his hospitality and for keeping an eye on JW for us. His contacts have been very useful. This forum is amazing - forum friends everywhere.

The crew, again, come from members of this forum.
All going well, they will arrive this evening and we will probably set off early tomorrow (Sunday) - however, the P1 powerboats are here this weekend so that may delay tings a little.

Crew this time will be djefabs, RogerRat and his SWMBO and Jez.

The route, which may change, will be Malta to Sidi Bu Said in Tunisia which is supposed to be a prety place but I we will have to be a bit careful as the harbour is a bit prone to silting. From there, we will hop across to Carloforte in Sardinia (no visiting tax now I understand but we would have been out of the season anyway). Then its back to that lovely natural harbour of Mahon in Menorca which will just leave us a short hop to Sant Carles.

BTW the weather here in Malta over the last few days has been hot hot hot (well for us anyway)

In Sidi Bu Said, if you get the chance, there is a great cafe at the top of the hill overlooking the marina. All on open multilevel terraces with everyone smoking different flavour hubbly bubblys, Was there on business last October.

I remember Sidi Bu Said marina from a few years ago. I had to hard wire into the tatty power supply and a huge gin palace sucked up all the power and dropped the voltage. I think I remember that cafe too.

I wasn't aware of any problems with silting.

Good place from which to explore Tunis.

Carloforte is not great for fuel as you are limited to the fishing harbour, very small entrance with about 2-3m depth. We tried to fill up there last week when I delivered a princess 67 from sicily to Puerto Banus.

Better fuel stop is in Porto Puente Romano? ( I think that is the name) Nice big harbour entrance and the choice of two fuel stations. I used the one on the right at the far end by the bridge. The guy speaks English, Spanish and Italian of course. I think we paid 1.18€ per litre.

If you would like his number PM me, he will open 24/7 but needs an hours notice.

Once filled I would then go to Carloforte for stop over.

Have a good safe trip. I hope this is of use to you.

Safe trip Hurricane ... Sorry I won't be in Mahon when you arrive. Stuck in Poole at the moment with finishing delays. However if you need anything arranging I'm at the end of the phone, you have the number.

Cheers for now

THe trip I will make next year, but in reverse and end up in the Ionian. Fuel in Tunisia is about 0.30 cents a litre. Dunno about this 1.18 a litre.

When are you planning your Carloforte stop over?
Unfortunately I'll be back there only from May 29th onward, and I guess you'll be there well before that.
I'd second Lozzer suggestion re.fuel, anyway.
The place he's referring to is this one, and the fuel stations are both on the southern part of the bridge. Very convenient when arriving from Tunisia.
There's just one very important thing to consider: the shortest route from the fuel stations to Carloforte is going north, under the bridge (no clearance problems - at worst, if you have a very high aerial you might need to lower it) and through a narrow channel in the lagoon, which is shown by most charts. Trouble is:
1) the channel is very badly marked. In many places, not marked at all;
2) its position is not very accurate in some charts;
3) in some places, 4 or 5 meters XTE can make the difference between a depth of a couple of meters and a couple of feet or even less.
So, unless you have someone onboard who knows the area rather well, I'd strongly suggest to take the longer route heading south and circumnavigating the island of Sant'Antioco, before heading north again towards Carloforte.

Bit late in posting - v slow internet connections along the route.

Anyway - we are now in Mahon after a very lumpy crossing from Sardinia last night - arriving after midnight - currently we are on the fuel berth waiting for it to open.

The passage from Malta to Tunisia was very manageable and comfortable - tight and rough entry into Sidi Bou Said but we got away in the morning - we were looked after well by the agent.

We then had another good day's run to Carloforte and what fab place - stayed til late afternoon- hence the late arrival in Mahon

Got to go now - the fuel berth has just opened - full report later.

I hope you have good weather & nice hot sunshine for the remainder of the trip, I’m presently sitting in my office in /Devon looking out at it p***ing down with rain. Have a safe trip homeward bound
