Be warned!

Since I enjoyed the 2013 International Forum GetTogether and following visit to SIBS so much, I decided to do the 2014 London Boat Show as well.

The Mrs. was out doing other things last time

the but will come next time.

If any of you guys plan to meet up on the 10. or 11. January we'd like to join :)

PS! Any sugggestions for cheapest transportation Gatwick - London-Greenwich? Seems car hire is close to half of train tickets

The quickest and cheapest way (by public transport) from London Gatwick to Greenwich is to get the normal train (non-Gatwick express) to London Bridge, then the jubilee line to North Greenwich...that said it depends where in Greenwich you are trying to get to, as North Greenwich is a long way from Cutty Sark! Driving in Central London is never fun, so personally I avoid it as the traffic is horrendous!

+1 for the train

You might find that if you buy in advance the price will drop dramatically

For example I recently got a day return from Kent to Birmingham for £24 incl tube fares

Thank you all,

I did check some of the online ticket services. Best appeared to be £33 return per person. 2 persons return makes £66 against car hire Friday-Sunday at £48 + petrol and some parking fees. Might end up eating the saving, but train def. beats traffic congestion.

Hmm, I just did a quick check for you, an open return including travelcard (this allows you to use the tube in central London), should cost £13. However if you need to travel at peak times it will be a lot more expensive admittedly. Looking at the price you quote, are you definitely looking at the regular, not the express service to Victoria?

Forum night has tended to the the late opening Thursday, when the likes of Princess and Sunseeker crack open the Champoo etc. I think it is the 9th Jan.

Got it off http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/ and aimed to avoid the Express.

At my last visit to London I used Oyster, but they seem to cleverly exclude the airports. Think Travelcard is one-day solution? If so £13 for each of two persons and two days will total to £52.
The number of different ticket types adds greatly to confusion, when not used to the system ;)

BTW the Danish system is for regulars as well - I'm lost when attempting :(

Yep Oyster cards don't include the airports and from Gatwick you can get three different train companies, with three different tickets, plus then there's various fare categories for each, its very confusing, even if you live here!

I think you're right, the travelcard is only for 1 day, but you could get a single from Gatwick to London bridge for £8.90 each, then get Oyster cards and use those to get from London bridge to Greenwich. That technically is probably the cheapest way...but a little irritating and awkward!

That's a good plan :)

I don't mind the hazzle with combined ticktes - afterall it's only two and the Oyster will be useful for getting to the boat show as well.

Have you committed to Gatwick? London City Airport is very close to Excel, and Oyster can be used on the DLR.

Yes, I know.
But in this case tickes to the City was 3½ times the price of GTW. I'm no natural friend of easyJet by any means, but for short flights like this it is OK when it bring the total cost down.

Oyster can also be used from Heathrow, although not the most convenient airport for Excel! Have you looked at Stansted. Easyjet or Ryanair for cheap flights, train to Liverpool street and a bit of underground DLR on an Oyster.

I did check all London airports.
easyJet to GTW was best match in schedule and money, so that is booked.

Greenwich hotel is booked as well. Seems good value and pretty central without being city center.

Greenwich is great...until they close the Jubilee Line which they seem to do most weekends :-(

That said if its open and/or you're nearer a DLR stop, its not too bad!
