To save starting a new thread too similar to this one (and not wishing to wind up the OP as I know this wasn't his line of interest...) I hope it's ok to enquire here...
I am very happy to add a diesel heater to give me some warmth during the cold weather, but my question is, am I better off going for a water heater and running the hot water to blowers, or more effective to go for hot air heating? My experience on a previous (sailing) boat was that by the time the air got to the bow cabin it was rather lacking in heat and oomph. Also am thinking that maybe running hot water pipes would be less destructive than the large diameter air hoses... Any thoughts?
I think your thinking is bang on.
Running small water pipes is less intrusive.
Also with a water heater you have the option of being able to run one pipe through your calorifier (if it has an extra coil to allow it) to enable you to heat hot water as well as heating for the boat. Altogether a much better option giving more flexibility.
The one point I would add though is that if you lag the pipes they stand a much better chance of getting the heat to where you want it; that was probably the main reason why your previous boat only got luke warm air to the front cabin. But lagging air hoses adds even more bulk to their already significant diameter.
You can pick up a used eberspacher/webasto for a few hundred quid (within your budget) - fit it yourself - relatively easy and its there when needed, especially when away from shorepower.
There is quite an interesting thread on PBO about Planar heaters - Vyv Cox' son Owen is the UK agent. So far all good reviews, and apparently good value.
4 kW is £550 plus Marine fitting kit £100 and 5m dual outlet ducting kit also £100. That knocks about £800 off the equivalent Eber D4 with similar extras. Planar also offer hydronic heaters.
I finally bought a Webasto Isotherm Air Heater from Butler Teknik, 60mm ducting and outlets from Propex Leisure and 16mm water hose, 90mm inlet ducting & stainless Jubilee clips from eBay; all in about £350.
