Blimey - saw the price and just realised that the second hand stern thruster that we fitted to our Broom 41 was a bargain at £350!

We fitted one to Piers' Play D'Eau about 10 years ago. Where he parks in Beaucette Marina, he would never get in or out of there without one. It was a SidePower.

As an aside, on Leander G, a 75m superyacht, we fitted a radial jet stern thruster of 450hp. Going through the ship canals, turned the main engines off and just used the thruster.

I used to have one on my s65. Hydraulic to boot so you could run it forever.

When I changed boats I was actually quite concerned as I had got used to the thruster. The only time it really helps is in a crosswind where you can hold the boat against the wind which is more elegant than the alternative - which if there are no adjoining boats needs fast rope application !

I would like another one if I change boats but I would not pony up the cash to add one.

I had a ST fitted to our boat when we bought her, a retro fit done by Osmotech on the Hamble. Superb job by them. It's a Side Power and we got the dual remote as well. The recommendation when we bought it was to have a more powerful ST than BT, the reasoning was that the bow will move easier that the stern so to be properly balanced the ST should offer more thrust. Don't know if the rationale is correct or not but all I can say is it all works perfectly well in practice. Think we are 9hp at the front and 12hp stern.

Boat 42ft. Vetus stern thruster, 185mm tunnel 3kw motor, works OK
The main thing with both bow and stern thrusters is to make sure you have a good voltage at the motor. This means an adequate battery capacity CCA) and heavy duty cable to avoid volt loss. The above motor takes around 300amp
