I'm hoping to get some work done on my 30 year old Bukh 10HP soon. I was told that it is possible to retrofit an air preheater (it has no glow plugs).

Can anyone offer any thoughts/advice/links on this, so I can investigate?

Thanks.

Should be straight forward enough, just drill and tap a hole in the inlet manifold to suit the contraption, screw it in and then plumb it in to the electrickery

Hi,

I used to have a B20 and there was a purpose made insertion point for a glow-plug on the underside of the inlet manifold. This was blanked off with a blanking plug/bolt.

I don't know whether this was standard on the 10's but it's worth a look if you haven't already done so.

Fitting the kit (from Bukh) was simplicity itself. Remove the bolt, screw in the glow plug, and wire it up, via a relay, to the ignition switch.

If you don't have the ready-made provision for the glow plug, I'd be inclined to check with Bukh before drilling a hole and tapping a thread in the manifold, as the casting was IIRC, thickened/reinforced at the fixing point.

Thanks Jerry, and the resyt of you. I didn't realise there might be a bukh part that would do it. Does anyone know if there is a 'Vanilla' air preheater, or do you have to rig something yourself? Presumably it has to run just whilst teh starter is engaged and then cut out or something?

Hi again,

I don't know what a 'vanilla' air pre-heater is I'm afraid. With the Bukh system I described, you turn and hold the ignition key anti-clockwise for say, 15 seconds (this switches on the relay and allows the pre-heater coil to get red hot) then turn the key clockwise as usual to start the engine.

The coil is therefore only activated PRIOR to engaging the starter motor. The system is very effective.

Sorry, my fault, by 'vanilla' I mean a plain one, one that will fit any engine, or a number of models, that sort of thing. I think I'll speak to bukh in the nmorning anyway, see what they say.

Thanks again.

OK, Bukh do this part, Its £126.90 plus VAT, and they have them in stock, From what I understand, they can be fiitted by most owners.

THanks for your help.
