Anyone think this could conceivably be a worthwhile aquisition ?

Realise it's a 12 month project, but even tired ones retail at US$120,000 and this is currently bidding at US$ 8,000 ?

Mast, boom, canvas, new Volvo, rigging, upholstery, electronics, blah blah US$50,000 probs ?

Don't forget to add in the cost of getting it somewhere where you can work on it, and the cost of storing it here. Great if you''ve got a spare barn or two, or a friendly farmer nearby, but a bit of a bind if not.

Personally I wouldn't touch it. It sounds as if it's had some kind of accident and then been forgotten about. There may be all kind of horrors waiting to cost someone a lot of money.

Add to that the location...

Let us know how you get on with it!

Anything GRP can be repaired, completely.

Never underestimate the cost of refitting any kind of boat however. The reality is more likely to be double what you think, than the figure you first thought of.
$8,000 is probably about right, but I bet it goes up a stack in the excitement of the auction.

Commuting Berkshire to Florida for a weekends work should prove interesting.

<<Anything GRP can be repaired, completely.>>

Yes true, but IIRC these particular boats are foam cored. I would bet a lot of money that the problem is a waterlogged foam core, so do you cut it out bit by bit and replace finish and move on to the next section and finally a few more sheets or GRP, and then gelcoat over the whole lot - sooner you than me!

biggest problem will be if you can get it into the country after rebuilding, and storage whild building could be $200 or more a month, and prob another $5000 for the motor replacement, and $7/8000 for mast and sails. pix do look interesting. good luck...

<< If this doesn't mention the fact it's a hurricane damaged boat then it's very unlikely to be one >>

It's in their list of hurricane damaged boats.

As always a lot of useful experience on the forum - thanks guys.

The foam core is something I hadn't considered, Talbot are you sure of this. From the (extensive) photos it doesn't look like the skin has been breached, just lots of internal water damage, probably through the hatches and those two enormous saloon doors.

I've e-mailed USauctions through e-bay, so I'll await their response.

I too expect some silly bidding towards the end of the auction also, so we'll see how it progresses.

Fatipa, as you say, it doesn't state hurricane damaged, but from the photo evidence it appears that the mast has gone taking the furling gear with it, which in turn has taken the pole which joins the two bow sections to which the trampoline was also attached, thus the trampoline mounting points have been damaged.

Notice also the stems have abrasion through the gelcoat down to the mat and there is some superficial damage to the after end of the bridgedeck and the transoms. Also amongst the photos there is a section of ally spar which has been torn apart.

Why there are light fittings missing and the port engine is in bits is anyone's guess, also every electrical fitting is corroded, so at some point it's been flooded to some depth and maybe the internal humidity has caused the corrosion ?

But if the hulls are intact as they appear to be (because it's afloat and the bilges are dry) then £ 5-6,000 is worthwhile in my estimation.

And here's what a sorted version looks like;

Here's where the forumites take a bow to Fatipa's knowledge and experience:

1) Can you, if security considerations allow, confirm its exact location
in Key West.

The boat is at Peninsular Marine Enterprises, 6000 Peninsular Ave, Key
West FL

2) Is this a hurricane damaged vessel ?

No, it was not damaged in a hurricane

3) She appears to have suffered extensive water damage below decks, was
this as a result of flooding ?

It does not appear to have been submerged, it looks as though it took
water in one motor from a bad head gasket, the boat history is unknown,
but it was very neglected.

4) Has the GRP shell been punctured at any point - I believe these
vessels are foam cored, so evidently this could affect the seaworthiness
of this vessel.

No, there is no evidence of hull damage

5) From the photographs she appears to be afloat, can you confirm this
is the case ?

Yes, it is afloat

6) Would any US sales taxes be applicable to me, as a UK resident ?

No, not as long as the boat is shipped out of the country within 30
days

Curt

Full marks on a speedy response by USauctions.

But how the hell do you get a 39' cat with only one engine and no mast out of the country in 30 days ? Overland transport costs would be astronomical !
