We are swapping from power to sail and wish to retain the boat name (part 1 registered), we did inform the buyer prior to purchase – is this straight forward or is it going to be a trip through paperwork alley?

Can understand you wanting to name your new boat with the old boats name.

But your new buyer will have the choice to name his new purchase whatever he likes, so prersumably may keep the boats name as it is!

My prference is to keep the boats name as it then keeps its history.

But thats JMHO for what its worth!

If you are cancelling Pt 1 then whats problem ? If he wants Pt 1 - then let him register it with whatever name he wants ...

As to keeping a name .. if your next boat is not Pt 1 - you can use the name anyway even if it's still applicable on old boat and new owner cont's the Pt 1 with the name .. even if you use SSR - it doesn't matter.

" I can name my boat any thing I like. Be it the same name or otherwise."

Nobody said you could not. OP wants to as well. Except his boat is Part 1 registered, and they will not register two boats with the same name. Thats why he is asking.

I cannot see where he says BOTH boats are Pt 1 registered ...

hlb - not true.

If we agree in the contract that I retain the name and that you change it, then you cannot call it that specific name.

I have been such a twat, too

If, in light of the sometimes conflicting advice given here, you decide in the end to rename boat instead then be very careful.
