Just Bought an Alacrity 19 day Boat It is 30 years old and tired looking The white GRP areas are faded and yellowing with some rust marking. Can anyone recommend a good quality cleaner/ restorer product that actually works and the best method to adopt for restoring this area

Naa, Blakes Paint! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously though, all the cleaners are going to involve some serious elbow grease or mechanical abrading/polishing. Painting could be an option, depends how deeply stained and marked the topsides are...

I think I've been using this:

(If you can wait till 26/10 when I get back on the boat, and I remember, I'll tell you exactly what it is).

My other half cant believe the difference it makes, taking the fibreglass from a dull dirty creamy colour, (with lots of various coloured scuffs), to a shiny smooth white gloss... still needs some elbow grease, but not as much as I expected.

did my hunter last year, I lightly sanded it with wet and dry to remove the stains, then I polished it with a car polisher, a cutting mop, available from car respray places, and G3 paste, available from motor factors. the differance has to be seen to be believed, I thought I was going to have to respray until I did this.

You may be surprised by poliglow.... does not take much effort at all... not sure what the cleaner is made of TLSea but that worked a treat and applying the Poliglow is really easy.

The guy who sells it is very helpful too and will chat away and explain the best way to get good results.

A good professional compound/abrasive polish if used with a professional buffer at 2500rpm will restore it removing stains, scratches and restoring glossification without a problem. DO take care if you are using these kind of products and machinery for the first time - if used properly the result will be as new.

Thank you, Mr Bush! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is a near miraclulous product that's cheap and highly effective. It's called 'Astonish' and is available from Wilkinsons. Very soon Plastimo are going to buy the patent, rebrand it as 'Marine Miracle' and charge £27.50 per pot.

hi there are several products under the astonish name can you tell me excactly what you used was it a oaste gel or liquid

But at 2500 rpm everything within 10 yards will be covered in little white dots so beware if you're doing it in the front garden or in a yard near other boats/cars etc.

Something with loads of torque at about 800 rpm would be better. If you know of anything like that I'd be interested!
