Researching my boat.

Can anyone give me some hints as to where to start ?

I would like a small (20-25ft) gaff cutter. Every time I see one advertised it is usually accompanied by a brief history of the boat from the vendor.

How can I verify this information or do some research of my own ?

I don't know where to start.

Speak to the vendor and ask for the previous owners and talk to them. What do you want to know about the boat, it's provenance, it's condition? A surveyor will tell you the condition, the appropriate owners club may help with provenance. Other people who know the boat around it's regular moorings will also be able to help. But the first thing is talk to the owner. If it's an old boat, hew will be more than happy to brag about it. If you are totally new to this game, I would think an old gaff cutter may not be the way to go. IMHO
